Greetings from behind enemy lines
Greetings folks, from The People's Republic of New Yorkistan. Please don't hold that against me.
I came here to take a shot a finding my Dad's old J frame service revolver, but not sure how to go about it, or even start. One step at a time.
A little about me. Former Glock Armorer, current M&P Armorer, USPSA shooter, NROI RO. AR tinkerer. I have a few S&W's from M&P 2.0's to a 1960's 2" J frame, M&P 15, and 15-22.
I help moderate a small locally owned firearms forum. I don't know if it's OK to link it here, so I won't. (ETA: Rule 9. Good thing I didn't.)
Anywho, I hope to be able to contribute in a useful way, and with some luck, a little help from God, and maybe a few members here, find my Dad's old gun.
Steve

Talk about finding a needle in a haystack. But stranger things have happened. I once walked into a gun shop and spotted a pair of N frame grips. I looked them over and wrote down the serial number on them. When I got home, I pulled out my 1950 Target 45 and it was the same serial number. Talk about making a beeline back to that shop!
I would suggest the first thing you do is read THE RULES. There is a separate set of THE RULES for each section. It may be you will have to wait a while and make a number of posts. THE RULES will tell you if that is so. When you are ready, I would suggest putting on a description, serial number, and any old pictures you may have of the gun if you do have them. Most of the people on this forum are scrupulously honest. I mean they would probably put the people in your church to shame in that department. Still caveat emptor is the order of the day. I have a friend who was determined to find the Browning Sweet Sixteen his father had sold at a country auction in 1962. Someone claimed to have it and my friend offered $3000 for it, but the guy could never produce the gun. Since then that person has been involved in other fraudulent episodes and was arrested. That was not on this forum. Wish you the best in your pursuit.

Best of luck, sound like a worthy quest. I spent quite a while trying to find my high school motorcycle... wish I would have written the VIN down back then!

Welcome from the top of Lavender Mountain in the NW corner of the Great State of Georgia.
I have visited your state, and politics aside, it sure is beautiful up there....But just a little too cold in the winter for a Georgia Boy!
I sincerly hope you find your father's gun.

Other than getting married and having children the happiest day of my life was the day I left NYC for good in 2005. So, I feel for you. Knowing the city as I do How did you manage the gun related things you did do? When I lived there you still had to fill out your CCP on a typewriter. Tha was impossible even in 2005. Any how, my sympathies to you and although I can’t help with your request I’m certain some one here can.

Welcome to the forum from America’s most northeastern state - Maine!
Fortunately after WW2, when my folks could travel again, we moved from NY back to Maine. So far we continue to live by the Constitution up here. Fingers crossed.
Good luck with your tracking pursuit!

Hello from WNY
Welcome to the forum. Great place to be and very nice and knowledgeable folks. You will learn a lot from the members.
Living behind the curtain sucks when it comes to things like AR-15 or semi autos with a 10 round limit
Luckily I’m a revolver guy until they go after those.
Once this Covid thing passes we should do a NY meet up as it seems we have several members from this state.

Thanks for the warm greetings. I've only been involved in a couple of online gun forums, but by and large, gun people tend to be some of the best people you'll meet. Many are surprised by that, I'm not.
I guess I should clarify that I live downstate, on the Isle of Long. Nassau, (some might say Nazi) County, vastly outnumbered by Anti 2A'ers. I guess if anybody here wants to get into shooting sports, you have to really want it to put up with all the legal BS, attitudes, costs, and relatively low amount of ranges, clubs, and gun stores.
I'm stuck here for 5 more years. Just have to decide where to escape to. I guess if there's a good way to look at it, it's so ****** here, almost any place will be an improvement.

Welcome from Texas!
Do what armprairie said. You're looking for a tiny needle in a large haystack and you have to understand that this is not the only haystack. So enjoy the Forum, enjoy whatever guns you get to own and shoot, and don't fret too much about dad's missing J-frame.
At least you're in Nassau County - a few miles east and you're definitely in the People's Republic of Newyorkistan. I was born and raised there my own self and somehow escaped 4 decades ago without planning it and basically never looked back. As we say, I got here as fast as I could - without realizing it!

Hi NY as well. If it weren't for goofy governors, high taxes and terrible gun laws this state would be great!
