First Patrolman
First revolver actually. Well, have two black power pistols from long ago. I started shooting in the late 50's and in the early '60's used my lawn mowing money to begin my collection of Mausers and Enfields at 10 bucks out a barrel at a Kresge store. Still have and shoot them. 30 years Army, MACV IV Corps Vietnam, then Desert Storm. Always did enjoy shooting, and about 15 years ago, resumed that hobby with IDPA and other recreational shooting. I have always liked especially vintage military long arms, from Sharps Buffalo rifles to modern, but especially WWll rifles. I had not gotten "into" revolvers, as I tend to be "all in" whenever I begin a new hobby or interest, and just could't go that route too. In order to shoot my firearms, I reload, now at 14 different calibers.
But the other day, I wandered around a Cabela's, and happened upon a really nice revolver, one that reminded me of what the police and HP wore when they stopped me on the highway. Big, intimidating firearms. So bought my first modern revolver, ($725) a 1973 pristine 28-2. It has no wear marks, and no marring of the screws, no chipping or wear on the grips, so I suspect someone bought it back then, shot it a few times, and put it away, properly stored.
Glad to have this forum, as I learn about my S&W and how to properly handle and shoot it. I have coming what I need to make ammo for this fine firearm, and will try it for fun in IDPA.
All the best.... SF VET. UpState SC
I will try to post a pic after lunch...

Welcome to the Forum, SF VET, you'll find a happy home here. Thank you for your service.
The Model 28 Highway Patrolman is an iconic S&W revolver and the favorite of many members here. You did well with your first modern revolver.
Enjoy.

Welcome. That 28-2 will make you want more revolvers and there is nothing wrong with that.

Welcome from Kansas. I bought my first 28-2 a couple years ago. Now there are three. There will be more S&W handguns in your future. And there is a lot of expertise on this forum.

Welcome aboard. The 28-2 is a workhorse revolver. Will take about any .357 load you may want to shoot, and could never be worn out with using 38's. With your reloading experience, look over a couple of your reloading manuals and select a load that looks to fit your needs. For lots of shooting, I would recommend a pretty standard load for 38 Special using 158 gr SWC or RN. Then progress from there when you feel comfortable.

You are going to love that Highway Patrolman. I bought one new about 50 years ago, and still love it.

Welcome to the Forum. The 28-2 is a good one, What barrel length is yours?
My first one was a six inch and I put a early model Aimpoint scope on it with a Weaver mount. Man, that thing was accurate and fun to shoot.

Wow, you didn't say it was a 4"er! It is a beauty at that! I wanted a 4" for a long time, but not enough to pay the price at the time I finally saw one. I think it was almost $500 bucks, and that seems so cheap now.
I ended up with about that much in mine, by buying a nice 4" barrel and having it swapped. The 6" barrel is too much for me. I love the 4" barrel on the 28's. You did real good. Congratulations, and welcome from KY!

Welcome and nice 28. Notice that the trademark is not obscured by the target stocks. My 28 had the trademark stamped lower and target stocks would cover a portion of it. Which was no problem as the full trademark was visible with the standard magna stocks it came with. I don't know if that is a random occurrence or intentional to accommodate the target stocks.
