Default Thanks for the add!

Mike here from Pennsylvania. Have had various S&W handguns for many years. My Father-in-Law passed down his Police Service revolver to me and I’d like more info on it. I went online to the S&W site and they want $100 for a research letter.

I’m retired on a fixed income and can’t swing that right now. Any advice on another avenue? I’ve done some research and I think it’s a Pre Model 15 K38 Combat Masterpiece, but not positive. I’m wondering what date it was shipped, if it’s okay to shoot +P ammo with it (it came with a variety of .38 Special, .38 +P and .357 ammo)

I know the .357 is a big NO NO, but not sure if it may have a “Heavy Barrel” and may be able to run +P.

Any help is appreciated.

Hey Mike-Welcome from Kansas. If you can provide the Serial number on the butt of the gun (May be covered by grips) someone will come along to hep with an answer. Also, look at the right side of the barrel and check the caliber of ammo. You’ll find a lot of good info here.

Welcome Mike. That serial number from the butt will open up a wealth of information. If it is a Combat Masterpiece, +P will be fine and .357 won’t chamber in it anyway. Enjoy the forum and treasure your father-in-law’s shootin’ iron.

Welcome from Georgia, it is rumored that some folks may play golf here, but there seems to be more shooters.

I bought the rosewood grips so I could use a speed loader. The serial number is clearly visible “K 256673”, while the numbers under the cylinder are hard to read from the pic. They are 2005 2 with a 5 below those numbers. I’d like to be able to use +P, but want to be sure it’s okay and won’t damage the gun. The barrel reads 38 S&W Special CTG. Any other info you can provide would be most helpful. 😎

Welcome from NW PA. SCS&W 4 says 1955 for manufacture. Plus P .38 Special is ok.

Thanks for the photos. That’s a good looking shooter. Just for future reference, the K on the butt is actually an important part of the serial number.
Good shootin’

Welcome ! The diamond Target grips alone give an approx date of 1960's
BTW thos grips are prob worth like $160

I am sure that plus P .38 sp ammo will be fine.
Even periodic 158g. .357 mag but avoid 125 grain .357 mag

Let the experts opine after the info discover is done.

Was I right about it being a Pre Model 15 Combat Masterpiece?

...and they are known to run +P without issue?

.357 won't load in the cylinder on a .38spl revolver.
