Default Hello from South Florida!

Hello all - happy to join the group! My name is Dave and I am an IT Technician/Programmer in the South Florida area. Have been shooting guns and collecting as soon as I was able. Love the history of firearms, their use, and the evolution of tactics and techniques used by civilians, military, and law enforcement shooters the world over.

I have owned a few Smith & Wesson firearms; couple of M&P Handguns in .40S&W and 9mm, had an SD9 as my first handgun years back, but I never had a S&W revolver. SOo i decided to change that!

Recently I began searching for a decently priced Model 19 or 29 to add to my collection (haven't found one yet, but I'm still looking) when an older coworker of mine mentioned that she had an older S&W Revolver (unknown model) sitting in her closet that she hadn't shot since it was purchased during her time on a farm in the PNW years ago. Purchased that from her for $200 as I wasn't sure of the model, and while it was in good condition, there was some wear on the firearm.

It looks very similar to a "pre" Model 10; it's chambered in .38 Special, is blued and has a 6" barrel. Only I don't see a model number engraved anywhere on the frame. There IS a serial number on the Butt of the revolver (Serial number starts with 'S' 987***). I'm no expert on revolvers in the least, but it definitely doesn't look like the newer Model 10's with the heavier barrel and thicker profile. Rifling in the barrel looks good, it was a very dry gun, so it will definitely need some oil and polishing, but otherwise it looks to be a solid shooter.

I emailed S&W a few times regarding the serial number to see if I could get any info, but they never got back to me. Just wondering if someone knowledgeable had any knowledge on these type of guns - should I keep it as a shooter or is this something that's is more of a collector's item??

Welcome from Charlotte County…just across the glades from you. That’s a beautiful M&P revolver you’ve got there, and this is The Place to learn more about it. I think I can confidently say there is more cumulative knowledge of S&W arms on this site than all others combined.
