Default 200gr 357 Magnum Loads?

Favorites?

Winchester 296?
2400?
Unique?

I'd like a load or two that can really put a thump into these 200gr lead flat nose bullets.

Thanks!

What do you consider a "thump"? I tested some 200 grain Lyman 358430s with 13 grains of 2400 today. They had some oomph, but no excessive pressure signs (sticky extraction or flat primers).

4" 681: 1155fps Ave., 592 ft.-lbs. energy
2 1/4" SP101: 1057fps Ave., 496 ft.-lbs. energy

I'd like close to 1200fps. That's what Double Tap loads this bullet to. Your 1155 looks good.

I would imagine it would be safe to work up higher than 13 grains of 2400, but I don't have any need to, so I haven't. I think 1200 fps should be doable in a 4" barrel. I got a 1200 fps average with 13 grains of 2400 in a .38 Special case with a 173 grain LSWC (note that this load is way over max and should only be used in magnum revolvers or perhaps a .38-44), but that was starting to show pressure signs, so the same charge with a 200 grain bullet would be too much.

I have loaded the Tennessee Valley 190gr WFP with 13gr of VVN110. That load made 1185fps from my 5 inch model 27. Five grains of Bullseve made 900fps from the same gun. Dean

If a recipe calls for a Magnum primer, and I only can get Small Pistol primers, what effect on the recipe will it have?

The 12.4 grain load in Winchester's Book says do not deviate from 12.4 grains. This makes me believe it's one of the recipes that an under load is as dangerous as an over load.

But it also calls for Magnum primers, and I don't have any, nor can find them. What I have are CCI, if that makes a difference.

Advice???

I have run this same bullet with 12.5 grains of 2400. I can't precisely recallthe velocity right now, but I know it smacks the snot out of rocks at 100+ yards.
