Default .45 LC, 300gr JHP

Just got two boxes in from Cabelas. The heaviest thing I've played with so far is 255gr LSWC.

So for you .45 LC guys out there, Whats your favorite huntin load for 300gr JHPs in a Blackhawk?

Handloader #217 June/July2002, has probably the best article that has been written on the .45 Colt loaded for different pressure level platform guns. Get yourself a back issue from Wolffe publishing. You won't regret it. By Brian Pearce.

All data is pressure tested data too. He list loads that use 25 grains of H-110 with a 310 grain NEI Keith style of cast bullet, LPM primers (doesn't specify brand, but I know he uses a lot of Fed., and CCI) case not specified either, since all loads listed are within the pressure limits of the Blackhawk. Velocities depending on barrel length will run around 1350-1400 FPS.

John Taffin, in his books often recommends 21.5-22 grains of H-110/296 with a 300 grain bullet for use in the Blackhawk for around 1200 FPS depending again on bbl. length.

I have tried most, if not all of these loads, and while the recoil is brisk in the Blackhawk, are good and safe loads. I have used these loads in Midway, Rem., and Win. branded brass with no apparent difference in performance or pressures in both a 5.5" Blackhawk, and a 7.5" Redhawk.

THE ABOVE LISTED LOADS ARE FOR USE IN BLACKHAWK, REDHAWK, AND F/A GUNS ONLY!!

Gun 4 Fun is right. The #217 Handloader issue is the one to get. You can get it through Google so you don't have to pay for it. The article details 285 gr loads for the RCBS SAA 270 gr cast bullet for older 14,000 psi loads, mid level 20,000 psi loads and high end 32,000 psi loads. Since this is a S&W forum, keep the pressures to the 20k level otherwise the high pressure stuff will beat your revolver into submission and damage will occur to your revolver. Ask me how I know.

I actually load the Hornady XTP over 7.5 of Unique. This is for use in a suppressed lever action. Velocity is right around 1050 from the 16" barrel and it is pretty quiet

This is not a load i would NOT fire in any firearm that needs to stay withing SAAMI pressure limits.

This is most definitely above SAAMI specifications for this cartridge and while I use it, make your own decision to work up to it or not.
