LCP tearing brass...

My Ruger LCP tears its brass on ejection. It has done it since I have bought it. It also tends to throw brass quite far. Like 15 feet almost straight back. I have read that this is typical of early LCPs, which mine is. Just over 1000 in serial number. It has been back since the recall, but they did nothing to fix the tearing of brass.

Even the spent cartridge that gets sent with the gun new has a tear in it. Does anyone know if Ruger will/can fix this free of charge? I am starting to put reloads into my LCP, and it is quite annoying to make sure that nothing sharp from the tear will affect chambering, and also to make sure the tear isn't near the extractor to ensure reliable extraction. (You have to pay attention when loading the mag...)

Anyone else with an LCP have these issues? I love the little pocket pistol by the way... This is the only issue, and only matters to reloaders... like myself.

The earlier ones were known to do this. There is a frame modification that Ruger was doing.There is probably a wear mark on the frame from the brass hitting it. Lots of info on the Ruger forum. As for throwing the brass, most small 380s seem to do that. My Ruger, KT and Walther throw the brass over to the next county.

Your best bet is to call Ruger. They are very good on customer service especially with the LCP.

My two main frame pins would work themselves loose after shooting a few mags. I called and they wanted to know if I felt OK with putting the new ones in myself

or they would send a call tag. I had the pins in 2-3 days.

I saw and reported the same problem when a Ruger rep. let me try out the LCP when brand new. I had heard the later guns did not have the issue. I hope you can get your gun fixed...if you intend to reload .380 as I do!

Somewhere on the net I had encountered slightly softer slide springs for the LCP to control the wild ejection. Can't remember where but if you spend some effort with Google you should be able to dig it up. My pistol throw the brass all over the place too as does my friends.

Wolff sells stronger springs for the LCP. Factory spring is 9 lbs, Wolff has 11, 12, and 13 lb springs and has a "Recoil Calibration Pak" with one of each. Don't think it will do anything about tearing the brass, but will help with the brass flinging into the next county. Springs for RUGER LCP .380 Semi-Auto Pistols
