Default range targets

I want to shoot at an outdoor range.

Was wondering what would be easily transportable and easy to set up.

Handgunning only.

This range has tables but is mainly low budget DIY.

Real Estate signs on the right of way along the road. Clean up your county and recycle at the same time. Pick up two or three along the road, and staple White pie plates to the center for a bullseye with a stapler. Fairly low tech, low, cost, portable, easy to set up, easy to move, and easy to pick up and remove when you are done shooting.

I staple my own 11" x 17" (Ledger size) targets to these and they work perfect for 10 yard handgun shooting.

One 8' 2"X4" and 2 1"X2"furring strips will make a great inexpensive portable target stand. The 1"X2" uprights pull out and the whole thing will fit in the trunks of most cars.

What he said, but I buy pads of newsprint paper at the local Hobby Lobby. I mark my "bullseyes" with a red majic marker. I forget what size the parper is, but it just fits the real estate / contractor yard signs.

You'll eventually shoot the retaining wire inside the plastic sign. The wire is a soft steel and will hammer back to shape. Lay it on your garage floor and tap it all around with a hammer until straight.

Shooting at paper is fine for grouping, but it gets boring, IMO. I prefer "reactive" targets, and use empty 20 oz plastic soda bottles, short chunks of 2x4, and claybirds propped up against said chunks of 2X4 or propped up with empty shotgun hulls. For handgun hunting, I set these out on the 25 yd berm, or under the 25 yd target stands.

When I hit the bottles, 2x4s, or the claybirds, I get an immediate visual confirmation that the target's been hit. I have a lot of fun "chasing" the empty bottles around, hitting them again and again where they land.

For rifles, I set out the 20 oz bottles at 100 yds and 2 ltr bottles at 200-300 yds, and claybirds propped up on edge at 100 and 200 yds.

Sometimes, I'll just pick out a spot on the 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 or 600 yd berms and use that for a target. The dust puffs tell me how I'm doing. The only drawback to this system is having to wait for the "shoot three shots, walk 200 yds" crowd calling for a safe range every five minutes so they can check targets and tape up bullet holes, etc.

Of course, I collect the plastic bottles before leaving.

Noah

There are certainly a lot more fun targets to shoot at than paper. Those fun targets give instant feed back but to a certain extent that’s all. I’ll be the first to admit I’d rather shoot reactive targets. Paper targets don’t lie to you. Paper targets show the positive and negatives of your shooting abilities.

Check out my folding and non-foldingtarget stands. The non-folding ones are stackable...

Thanks.

There are some inexpensive stands here:

Welcome to ALCO Target Company

Not the same quality as G-Mac's, but serviceable.

Exclamation

Here is mine. $10

Bulldog clips hold target or backing on to stand.
It can be taken down a folded flat.
Needs no pounding into the ground.

Just one problem and it needs to be changed on future models. The single riser in the middle. If you shoot a firearm that is not relatively sighted in already, you can destroy your setup pretty easily. Like when you move a handgun from 25 to 50 yards! Don't ask me how I know!

Two risers, one on each side will work much better.

Just s suggestion.

I built one similar to SC's...two legs instead of one. It can hold 6- 8 1/2 X 11" targets. I use a disposable cardboard backing, and can staple targets to the backing board. Also made some struts to give it support, and some pegs to anchor it in the ground on windy days (its a very light set up). Its nothing fancy, but at times when I shoot "remote locations" its an easily transportable, quick set up target stand. I have used this stand for 3 years and it has worked well. I will try to get a photo up later...........All these ideas are good ones, and I think that before you buy or build, you need to take your particular use into consideration.

Yours is similar to what I built for a portable rig big enough to handle the standard NRA B-27. I used a pair of carriage bolts with wing nuts to create a clamp from the cross bars allowing me to use different sizes for the uprights and to adjust the target for plumb. I affix my B-27 to the frame with large spring clamps.

Photo as promised........The good and bad of this set up is the light weight. On windy days I have opposing leg supports and anchors that have to be used, but, it still only takes about a minute to set up. It is VERY light, so if you change yardage, or have to hike a bit to where you are going to shoot (which we do from time to time), you will appreciate that. Cost about 20.00 and some time, and some old aluminum rod and flat stock that I had laying around the shop for the supports and anchors. I have used it for three years and it is still holding up...not made to last a lifetime like G-mac's (and, if I had a permanent shooting situation those are the ones I would go with...first class all the way!), but, for now it gets the job done.
