Default How to chronograph shotgun slugs?

I am loading shotgun slugs and would like to know how fast they are going. Is there any practical way to do this without having the wads cause false readings or strike the equipment?

Some years ago when we were playing with 10 ga magnums, we did a lot of chrono work. To avoid the equipment damage we took a chunk of 1"x2" 3/16" wall steel tubing and used it to attach the screens. We first welded 4" x4" plates to the tubing to protect the screens. Seemed to work just fine.

Cut a piece of 1/2" plywood with a hole in it the shape of the opening that matches the triangle of the sky screen. It goes in front of the chrony and "Catches" the stray wads.

Shotguns operate at very low presure levels (8,000-12,000 psi ave.) especially compared to centerfire rifles, and even handguns. Having the screens only a few feet in front of the muzzle (like 5-10 feet) will not cause faulty readings from the pressure shock wave like a rifle round would do, and if your screens are large enough like those on the Oehler, some Comp Electronics models, and some Pact models, you really shouldn't have any trouble with debris hitting the screens. I never have with my Oehler.
