Default Hornady .357 CL-SIL & JTC-SIL 160 grain bullets?

I've got 400 Hornady #3572 160 grain CL-SIL and JTC-SIL bullets. I understand these are designed for silhouette shooting. And of course I realize these can be used for general target practice, plinking etc.

Does their purpose stop there or can they be used for defensive ammo or for wild critter dispatching? Do they expand?

I also am curious about the bullet design on the front, why exposed lead and why the difference between the two. I'm wondering if the CL-SIL would make a good defensive bullet? I like the small star design and the crimped serrations.

Any experience with these?
