Would there be any harm in using large pistol magnum primers in .45ACP? I'm using Bullseye and Red Dot. Not my first choice, but things being the way they are...

If you are loading high performance loads, you will want to back off on the propellant charge a bit. If you are loading wadcutter/target loads, performance will be satisfactory but groups may not be quite as tidy as with standard primers. Surely primers are starting to become more available in and around Denver.

Winchesters are the same for large pistol, can't say for others. I wouldn't see any problem as long as your not running the max loads for those powders. It may cause slightly higher pressures than a standard primer.

Still kinda spotty, Dan. You see them occasionally, but more often it's "yeah, xxx had some yesterday, but I think they're sold out".

Well, here's an update. Turns out that the primers were small pistol mag, not large pistol after all. So, since the difference between small pistol and small pistol mag is greater than large pistol, I'll probably just use these in magnum loads or trade them for standard primers.

Using starting loads I have seen no difference using either LP magnum or SP magnum primers.

I bought a box of 1000 sm. pistol magnum primers once by accident.

To get the same velocity in 9mm, I decreased the powder charge about 1/2 grain. I checked a few with my chronograph, and they were very close to my 'usual' load.

I used the magnum primers in my cast lead loads, since they are loaded fairly light, and the chance of getting an over pressure load is small.

I load my 9mm FMJ a little warmer, so I didn't use any of them magnum primers in those 9mm loads.

For my 357 magnum range loads, which are very light 38 Special loads anyways, I didn't make any changes. I didn't notice any difference, in recoil, or accuracy.

It's probably less trouble to just use them, than to try to trade them, I would think.

Unless you know a fair number of people who reload who live close enough, to make it worth driving to make the trade. Shipping primers is expensive.

There's not much difference between standard and Magnum primers in the .45 Auto. You will probably need to drop the charge only .1gr to match the velocity produced by the standard primer.

BTW, I use W231/HP-38 for my 9mm ammo.

Hi,

I have used nothing but CCI magnum primers in all handgun loads since about 1986. Accuracy, with the correct powder and bullet, combination is as good as 1 1/4 inches at 25 yards depending on the cartridge.

All loads started at safe levels and worked up to desired velocities. Target as well as magnum loads with almost all available powders.
