Default trail boss

Any one here use trailboss powder. I purchased a pound (actualy ) 9 oz.
I have loaded some 44 mag, 44spl, and 38spl with it but have not been able to get to the range to try them. Just wondered if anyone here has had any experience with it.

Hi there, I have found that in 44 special and 38 special Trail Boss can be very accurate with lead bullets. Be carefull with your powder measure as I have had it bridge in the drop spout and light load one case and overload the next.

Great results on 38 spl, 44 spl and light 44 magnum loads.

I'm sure if you ran a search here in this forum, you'd find a lot of interesting threads on the subject.

I've shot a couple cans of it in .38 Special and .41s, and I really like having it around. It's sort of an idiot-proof way to get powder-puff target loads. Velocities are really low and accuracy is not the best I've found, but it's clean (cleans up with a wipe-down), meters well, and totally stress-free (as it's so fluffy that it's impossible to overload with in modern firearms and charge-to-charge weight deviation of powder throws is almost nil). It ignites great. You'll never have positional sensitivity issues with a full case of marshmallow-weight granules. It responds to magnum primers by shifting to overdrive, which is kinda neat (but still safe). I've never had anything lead over it.

Downsides? As you note, it doesn't go far - that 9 ounce can is fluffy. And it's not cheap. It has a distinctive smell, which is a little odd but not unpleasant. You can get wide spreads if you compress it at all.

Honestly, though, I'd rather have it around than Bullseye.

Still up in the air on this one. So far it hasn't added anything to my loads that I couldn't do with Bullseye or some other powder for less $$$. I need to play with it more.

This powder was designed to for use in cartridges like the 45 colt that were originally loaded with black powder. Thats why the puffy donut shape. It will fill the case better and still give low pressures. I tried it in my model 25 and got better results with 8gr of Unique

I use it and like it. When I see it for a good price, $13-14 per can, I buy it and keep a couple of cans on hand. I've used it in 38 spl and 45 colt. It turns the 460 S&W magnum into a gigantic cap gun and can drive a 300 gr jacketed bullet at 1000 fps.

After I tried Trail Boss and liked it I purchsed the 4 or 5 lb container at ca $14/lb. I prefer Trail Boss for all my lead and plated bullet loads in the older black powder cartridges - 38 Special, 44 Special, 45 Colt, 38-40, 44-40 and even 45 ACP revolver loads. Trail Boss meters well, no possibility of a double charge in those tall cases, excellent accuracy and milder perceived recoil for the same velocity.

It also makes you look handsomer, taller, and sweetens your breath! I like the stuff fine, but this doesn't jibe with what I remember from Honors Physics.

Groo here
Hay Eric . So you used mag primers ha...
I use Trailboss for lighter loads in magmums.
just fill the case,[less the bullet] crimp well and go..
Ps you get less in a can but about the same number of shells per can..

I use it exclusively for my 45LC cowboy loads. 200 gr lead over 6.2g TB gives spectacular performance for SASS matches.

I like it for some 44 mag loads. My perception is the recoil impulse spike is wider & less abrupt. Doing chronograph comparison in the 900-1100 fps range with 200-240 g lead slugs in 41 and 44 mag and 45LC, the recoil is more pleasant than such as Tite group or HP38 with the same data points.

I don't care for it in 38 special or 357 mag though. Nor 45acp.

YMMV.

Neat stuff, especially for Black Powder cartridges. Just loaded some in 10.4mm Italian Vetterli. 12.5 gr Trail Boss, 325 Gr cast bullet, and they went over the chronograph at basically standard velocity for the cartridge. Chronographed at 1317 fps, standard velocity is supposed to be 1345 fps.

This load was simply a case full to the base of the bullet. This case has about the same capacity as .45-70, and 12.5 grains filled it. Should be just as good is .45-70, .38-55 or any other Black Powder cartridge with casr bullets to get Black Powder velocities. Just don't compress it, gets erratic for pressure and velocity.

I tried it and am not impressed with it, especially with accuracy. If nothing happens to change my mind before the end of the jar, it'll be my last.

This was developed for Cowboy loads, I use it for cowboy action matches, it gives a more complete burn when loaded in small charges compared 231, titegroup etc. I use 4.0g in .44 mag cases with a 180 LFP bullets for about 650fps in 4 5/8 barrels. The steels are set very close in a lot of cowboy matches and bounce back is a problem with high speed ammo, so very low charges are required and most powders tend to not give consistent burn. The reduced recoil also helps with getting back on target quicker after firing. Cowboy is much more about time than accuracy. Good stuff for it's intended purpose.
