Question HS-7

Was at a gun show recently...Just couldn't stand it...traded for 7- 1lb cans of Hodgdon HS-7. Old stock.. I think it is roughly the same as Win 571. As I pretty much use only 231 and Unique...Wondering what handgun cals I can use the HS-7 in? I load 38/357 44 spec 41 mag and 45 auto.. Guy also has 5 or 6 lbs of HS-5 I could get for roughly 5 dollars a lb. Isn't that the same as Win 473?? I only had 25 bucks in the stuff I traded for the 7 lbs of powder. Cheap..I'm just cheap Not wher I can get to load books right now..... Traveling

I've used both HS6 and HS7 in .357 and .44 mag mid range loads with good results. HS7 also works very good in .45 Colt with loads a bit above SAAMI specs. I still have one can about half full and one full can to use up.

HS-7 is a bit slower than HS-6. I use a lot of HS-6 for .38 Special +P loads as well as in the .45 Colt and for some .357 Magnum ammo especially with lead bullets.

HS-7 is W571 so if you find data for W571 it can be used, unfortunately both are now out of production. HS-7's burn rate is close to that of Alliant Blue Dot. HS-7 is one of the best, if not the best powder for loading 10mm ammo. It also works very well for the .38 Super and can be used for the .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and hot .45 Colt loads. There are probably other uses but those are the only ones I'm sure of... Hope this helps.

I like the powder, too bad it has been disc. I use it in heavy 45colts, 357sig, 40 & 10mm. When my last # is gone, I'll switch to Longshot (I think it's replacement). SO far LS has shown sim results in 357sig & 10mm. I like it better than BD in those calibers.

Default Thanks for the reply.

I think I am going to sell the HS7 or most of it. Guy wants to trade me for some 4198 which I will use in the 222. I did buy the HS-5 for 5 bucks a lb and it is none other than 473 Winchester..I'll load it in the 20 ga.. I also acquired some Win 540 and some HS-6 all for 5 bucks a lb..I can load it in handgun and 28 ga

Skeet, just in case you didn't know HS-6 and W540 are one in the same powder.

Call me Thursday between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM CDT at 800-622-4366 ext 110. By dialing the ext # right away, you can skip over all the recorded options. Should I be on the phone or away from my desk, I will not be away long. Leave a message and mention this post so I can move you to the top of the recall list.

I can pull the old manuals, make copies and send the data to you.

Others here are correct that HS-7 and Winchester 571 are interchangeable. One of those same product under a different label deals.

BUT there is an ERROR above - HS-5 is NOT the same as WW473. They are not interchangeable but I could dig up dat for the HS-5 as well
