Default Trimming .44 Special to .44 Russian

I haven't reloaded in 25 years, but the cost of feeding my M24-3 and M624 just got worse after I bought a .44 DA in .44 Russian. The cost of .44 Russian is even worse than .44 Special!

I plan to turn some of my .44 Special brass down to .970, something I've never done before. I'm retired and reasonably patient, but wonder if I'll regret buying a hand-cranked case trimmer. I'll probably do no more than 100 rounds at a time. Your opinion is appreciated.

Thanks!

My hand crank trimmer is designed so that I can remove the crank handle, and attach a drill to alleviate the chore of all that cranking. Maybe yours will allow something similar. hat type are you using? Mine is an old Pacific (Hornady).

Another thought is to buy a file/trim die and a good hacksaw and blade, then shorten them that way and finish with the deburr tool.

Dos,
Midway USA has Starline .44 russian brass at $21.99 per hundred. You might even find it cheaper if you shop around a little. A hundred rounds will last a long time.

I've done what you're contemplating many years ago. I wish I'd known about the Starline brass at that time. It would have saved much time and frustration.

Ditto on getting some new brass. Midway carries Starline but appears to be out of stock right now. An even cheaper source is scarch at $81.00 for 500 rounds. Products Graf's has some Starline in stock: https://www.grafs.com/product/272130

I've made .41 "Russian" brass out of .41 magnums before. It took a lot more elbow grease than I thought it would and ended up buying the power drill converter for my trimmer. I'm also a cheap skate, and the converter was a lot less then what Starline is selling their brass for. So I can't really say what I'd do if I was you.
