Default Lyman # 55 powder measure on top of my LEE Classic Turret Press?

Hello,

Do you know if it's possible to mount my Lyman #55 powder measure on top of a LEE Classic Turret Press? -- And at the same time get case expanding/flaring in this die-station!

I know it comes a 7/8-14 die-thread adapter in the package. But this solution will not give me expanding/flaring as far as I can see.

Any solutions?

Best Regards,
khpe

Yes I use the Lyman 55 and the Lyman Universal Powder thru Die for this application. For me it works great.

EDIT: It's called the Multi-Expand Charge Die System>>>>http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/d...ality-dies.php

I use one too only my set up is more "jury rigged" than his!

Works fine though and for the longest time, that was all I had for a powder measure. One of the best in my opinion.

Hello again,

I have done some more testing and thinking:

1.
I mounted the re-size and decapping die in station 1.

2.
I used the Lee powder trough expanding die (comes with the Lee Deluxe Pistol 4-Die Sets) in station 2. --- Now I have expanding/flaring.

3.
I then mounted the Lyman powder measure on the 7/8-14 die-thread adapter in station 3. --- Now I also have powder-charging.

4.
I mounted the Lee seating die in station 4. It can also performe a combined seating and roll-crimping operation.

---

Well what did I miss? --- RE-PRIMING.

There was a collision between the Lyman powder measure and the Lee Safety Prime System when the Die-Turret rotated! -- so my "solution" did not work.

Therefore I had to ask you "Scrapper", on this thread, if you have found a solution on the problem with the Lee Safety Primer.

Thank again,
khpe

PS! I load for .38 special (s&w m-10)

Default Check out the picture of my set-up...

I need to think more about this but off the top of my head if you use the Lyman universal powder through die it should raise the powder measure high enough to be out of the way. I'm not sure though as I'm using the Lyman T-MAG press.

EDIT: I think you may get about 2 or more inches higher mounting with the Lyman Multi-Expand Charge Die.

That's not a Lee press either!

I have the same kind of setup as you do. I use the die on top of the Lee powder through die. It came with some accouterments and I cobbled some stuff together to make it work. There is a riser you can get as well from Lee, it is made for their measure, and put it in place to solve the problem you are having. With it mounted in the top of the die the way I use it, it is still easily positionable. If there is a crash, while it is up quite a bit higher, I simply turn the measure out of the way and that is that. It kind of floats in the top of the die. Hard to explain. I will get pictures this week and post.

Hope this helps.

To "smith crazy",
I would be glad if you could be more specific about what accouter you connected together. --- Is the die you used on top of the Lee powder through die the mentioned so called "Lyman Multi-Expand Charge Die" ?

Default Here are some pictures

Well, here are some pictures of my setup when I use the #55 on top of my Lee Classic turret press.

Not the fanciest setup but it has worked for a few years. I only load small lots on this press/setup. My 44Mag hunting loads, small rifle batches and such like.

Good Pictures smith crazy,

I can see why that Prime system will get in the way if the powder measure is mounted too close to the turret.

Default Lyman 55 Powder Measure on Lee 4-Position Turret Press

Hello Guys,

Sorry that I'm stepping into this post late, but I'm trying to do exactly this (adapt a Lyman 55 powder measure to a Lee turret press with a Lee powder-through die). Thanks for the photos and text, but being a reloading newbie I'm still not clear on exactly what I need to make this work. I would be extremely grateful if you could be very specific about the parts needed. I do have a new Lyman 55 powder measure with all parts and a Lee 4-position turret press and dies. I'm reloading .38, .357, and 9mm Luger. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please note that I'm using the Lee primer feeder, so I'll need the powder feeder to be able to clear that during turret rotation. Thanks!

P.S. - smith crazy - It looks to me like you've re-threaded the adapter that came with the Lyman 55 to fit the Lee powder-through die. Is that correct? When I tried mounting the 55 on the Lee die earlier today, the threads weren't compatible. Do you happen to know the required thread size? Also, will it be possible to use the primer feeder with the 55 in place? Looks like a tight fit. I'm debating on whether or not I should return the 55 or modify it like you've done.

Steve

Steve,
Welcome to the forum. To be honest, I don't remember modifying the #55. Mine sits in the top of the die rather than threading into it. Look at the first pictures I have there. I got the #55 used and it came with that stem in it. There is a riser that you can get from Lee that put the powder measure up higher and the crazy thing is; you need it to use their with their measure and their dies in their press! CRAZY!

Go to Lee precision on the web and you can find a picture of the riser, I think. I just don't remember modifying anything and mine just sits in the top of the die.

Wish I could help more. One other thing, you will never regret having the #55. That can't be said for other powder measures.

Enjoy

Hi smith crazy,

Thanks for the information. That's interesting... I wonder if they've changed the adapter that comes with the 55? When I tried mounting it on my buddy's Lee die yesterday it definitely wouldn't thread in. The powder measure that came with his turret press was the Lee Auto Disk Powder Measure. Being a Lee powder measure on a Lee turret press & die, it fit fine but it was just barely tall enough to clear the primer feeder when the press rotated. So he went ahead and ordered the extension tube that I think you're referring to. I bought the Lyman 55 to use on his press since I had read lot's of good things about it. I'm hoping that I can get it to work.

When you say that the 55 sits on top of the die, is the die threaded but you aren't using the threads? Is the feeder tube just sitting on top of the die then? Thanks!

Steve

Go to page one of this thread. Look at the last picture in my previous post. Notice the through powder die? See the stem on the #55? No threading. No matching threads. It simply slides inside the top of the powder die, period. I don't know how to make that any clearer.

It simply slides into the top of the die. FWIW

Well, maybe the first picture on this page is a better one to look at. You should be able to get the idea from either one.

Simple solution, buy a Dillon. Keep the 55 for other applications.

I see what you're saying now. No threads at all on top of your powder-through die. My buddy's new Lee die is threaded, but it's a much courser thread than that on the 55's drop tube. I guess I'll wait and see what's on the extension tube that he bought before I do any "drastic" mods on the tube I've got. Thanks for the help.

Hi all,

At moment I am using Lee Classic Turret with Lee Pro Auto-Disk Powder Measure.
What is the need in your opinion to replace the Lee Pro Auto-Disk Powder Measure with a Lyman N° 55 Powder Measure ?

Thank you for any explaination about.

Just bought this adapter

I can imagine. First the USPS has to figure out where Italy is.

Here I am with some pictures ...

The Lyman #55 over LEE Classic Turret

and a detail of the Uniquetek adapter

As you can see, I used the Lyman Large Drop Tube completely fitted into the 7/8” x 14 Adapter and into the Uniquetek adapter and I removed the Lock Ring.
This setup seems to work perfectly and there is no interference with the LEE primer feeder on the right. Just rotating quickly the turret, the knocker assembly is hitting slightly the LEE primer plastic case because of the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the unit.
