Anyone have a good load/bullet combo for 303 Enfield plinking.

Something with Bullseye, 32 cal pistol bullet, cream of wheat

Wish I'd taken better notes. The only thing I remember using Bullseye was 5 grs with a .311RB.

I had also shot Speer HBWCs, seated in both directions, Hornady XTPs, assorted cast bullets for both rifle and pistol and jacketed bullets for 7.62 X 39. It's a very versatile firearm, as I'm sure you're aware.

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that I had used dacron pillow stuffing instead of corn meal. Also you can lower with the RB and Bullseye combination, but I don't remember how much.

I've always used anywhere from 9 to 12 grains of Red Dot in 303, 30-06, 8mm Mauser and Mann/Schoenaur and others.
Both cast and jacketed bullets but I prefer cast if I have them. No real reason, just preference. Normal weights,,no ultra light weight bullets.

The lightest weight I use for the 303 is pulled .311dia bullets from 7.62x39 ammo @ 125gr. They were pretty cheap as I recall when I bought them but that was a while ago.

Use NO filler. You won't need any as the Red Dot is bulky enough that it will fill the case to 2/3 or more even with the light charges.

Recoil is extremely soft. Fun shooting. Easy on the shoulder.

I did try Bullseye in 8mm Mauser & Schoenauer at one time w/ 8mm Nambu bullets (,323) but accuracy was very poor in the two rifles I tried. Some people have very good results with it though.

On the 'CB Loads/Military Rifles' or the 'CB Loads/ Your Favorite Cartridge' sections you can find alot of light load info for the 303.

A load I have enjoyed shooting was developed by Ed Harris. He calls it "The Load" -- 13 grains of Red Dot in full sized rifle cases of .30 caliber or larger. I got extremely good groups using this load in my 03A3 (.30-06) with 150 - 165 grain bullets. It is also supposed to work great in .303 British rifles.

Obviously, only use this in rifles designed for smokeless powder.

Since a couple posters mentioned Red Dot, let me add this...
Red Dot is popular for shooting lead bullets at reduced velocities from rifles. And it is a good choice for this, but, it doesn't necessarily have reduced pressures, so be careful in working up loads using it.

You don't need fillers. My guess would be that 7gr of Clays/Bullseye, lit by a WLR primer, behind a cast bullet will give you an accurate 1100fps plinker. But that is just my guess as I don't load for the .303. 7gr of Clays just happens to be the magic number in a couple of different cartridges.

I just remembered an article C.E. Harris wrote in the American Rifleman (July 1993) called "Don't Overlook the Lee-Enfield" where I first saw the "13 grains of Red Dot" load.

He gives a lot of reduced power loads for the LE. It may be worth digging up a copy if you are interested.

By the way, Mr. Harris notes that some of these loads are sufficient to take deer at reasonable ranges, so follow all safety rules as you would when shooting any firearm. They may not be full-tilt long range loads, but they certainly can be deadly.

Thanks all for the information. I just got back into reloading after being out of it for more than 30 years. I'm having a blast with it.

My son loves anything military. So for Christmas this year I want to get him a really nice Enfield. I have a pistol range set up at the house but shy away from shooting hi powered rifle loads. These plinking loads will be just the ticket.
