Anybody have some favorite loads using cast 180 grain Keith bullets in 357?
Anything using 2400 powder?
I'm thinking about using them for deer hunting at ranges under 40 yards.
Any suggestions of discussion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Are you talking about the Lyman 358429? If so, I've loaded that one a lot. I consider it the best choice of bullet for the .357.
13.5 gr 2400, std primer. That's listed as max in the latest Lyman book but I think it used to be higher. This load shoots very good in my 586 and is good for about 1250 fps.
It will kill a deer a lot farther than 40 yards if you can place it right.
cp, thanks for the load. I'm sure I could shoot one much further, but I'm going to limit my shots to a set distance and 40 yds is close enough for the stand/feeder set up I have in mind.
I'm going to be shooting it out of a 6" Model 19 with iron sights or a 2X Burris scope. I haven't the scope set up yet so I'll make up my mind after I try it.
Will that load work OK on the rams at 200 meters?
I intend to give that a try too.

Yes, that bullet is OK for silhouette targets, but you may find the .357 is marginal at 200 meters especially when handloaded for the Model M19. I used the same gun when I first got into silhouette shooting and found I could not develop a load heavy enough to insure 200 meter targets would go down reliably. 200 meter targets often need a little more zip than the .357 can deliver.
As the previous poster said, that bullet is OK for silhouettes but the cartridge itself is at the lower end of power to get the job done. That's why they invented the .357 Max cartridge (may it rest in peace).
I only shot sihouettes one time with a really nice M27 .357 but it was not mine, nor did I know what load I was shooting. Some of the rams I hit wobbled, but didn't fall. It was OK, though, because my score sucked anyway and I was nowhere in contention. We got a good laugh out of the teetering rams.
