Default .45 ACP w/plated bullets

I hope I've not missed previously posted data.

I'm looking for a good load to fire in my .45 ACP's. I'm using Berry's plated bullets and Titegrope powder. When I follow data I've seen, the OACL is too short looking (2.20 reccomended for LRN vs my normal 2.60 for FMJ). Do I need to change powders to get my "nice looking cart. or can I just play around with what I've got to work with. If you're using this combo, give me your impressions on it. 2.20 just looks too short, Maybe that's what i need to use, but as you know, a 4506 will digest anything well.

Thanks.

Well, I'm gonna jump in even though I won't use Titegroup to fertilize a garden!

Love the company, can't stand the powder! Too fast for hot loads and not enough in the case to keep from having a triple charge!

One question though, what weight bullet are you loading?

Here is something you can do to get your "nice looking" cartridge back (although, I have never loaded to that standard! ) Simply lengthen the OAL! You will not get into trouble with Titegroup and excessive lengths, as long as you are in the prescribed data. You will lose velocity, that's true. Simply bump the charge up a bit .2gr for every .030" that the OAL is lengthened.

Case in point: 230gr bullet and x.2gr of Titegroup @ 2.200" OAL would be x.4gr of Titgroup @ 2.230" in my world and maybe x.5gr @ 2.260".

That's me. If I was shooting them in a M625, I would/could go a bit more if I wanted. Although, I wouldn't cause, I'd use a different powder!

Have a good day!

smith crazy, I respect your opinion and have been thinking about Winchester 231 for a change. Titegroup is what I use for .45 Long Colt, .45 ACP and .44-40, burns clean and meters well, kind of a one size fits all. Of course, my wife will tell you one size will not fit all. I've never loaded plated bullets before so this new, 230 gr. BTW. As far as loading for looks, at 2.20 OACL, the Berry's plated seems crimp too close to the case mouth for my liking. I like the case mouth to grip the bearing surface a little further down. Berry's is a bit shorter than the jacketed bullets I'm used to loading (speer).

Thanks for the advice and suggestions.

The one on the left is a Berry's, on the right a Ranier's, both are 230gr bullets.

I use either Bullseye or AA#2 for either bullet. 4.7gr of Bullseye and 5.3gr of AA#2. I seat to 1.250" or so. I shot them in a PPC competition of a few years and here is a picture of some of the targets. They were shot with a Taurus PT1911 that was stock out of the box.

I generally just load a 230gr LRN, plated, whatever... to 1.25", which is the OAL of a WWB FMJ.

I've tried Bullseye, W231 & Green Dot. Always seem to keep coming back to the Bullseye.

For load data use cast boolit data with the plated bullets. 4.7gr of Bullseye is about what I use. Over 4.8gr and the Berry's 230gr start to pattern instead of group out of my 4.2" barrel KP90.

True, but at least you should tell everyone that those targets were 5 yards away.

OK, OK, I'll be completely honest with the targets. I ran up to them and shot them at 1'!

No, all kidding aside; these were from my local gallery PPC league. The course of fire is: 12 shots in 18 seconds, 6 rounds per, 1 mandatory reload, @ 21' shot offhand, stronghand, two handed; 18 shots in 70 seconds, 6 rounds standing, 6 rounds kneeling, 6 rounds sitting, 6 rounds per, 2 mandatory reloads, @ 20 yards (longest distance indoors at this shooting range) offhand, stronghand, two handed.

There were no rests or supports used while shooting either of these targets.

I will confess one other thing; it has been over a year ago that they were shot.

The correct length for .45 ACP 230gr roundnose is 1.2", NOT 2.2". SAAMI max OAL for .45 ACP is 1.275".

I load 4.2gr Titegroup under 230gr Berry .45 roundnose at 1.2" OAL. Just fast enough to be legal for USPSA single stack and IDPA/CDP. Easy to control.

Dang! that is good shooting. You know I was kidding you. I'd have trouble getting back up after kneeling
I sure couldn't do that.

Yes, that would make quite a difference!

For the OP, here is the info from the Hodgdons website.

Thanks and yes, I knew you were teasing, no problemo!

By the way, you don't get up after kneeling, you go ahead and sit down! Then after you shoot the sitting portion, you have to get up! I'm sure someone would help you, old timer!

Thank you guys for the very helpful and wanted feedback on this cartridge/bullet type. It's apparent that I may need to try other powders for my .45 ACP loadings. I'm willing to do that in the name of accuracy and shootability. I'm headed to Sportsmans in the morning.
