Shoot S&W 44's? Get the latest Handloader magazine
For those who don't already subscribe to Handloader, I highly recommend it.
The latest issue has an unprecedented 3 articles about loading for S&W 44's.
Brian Pearce has 2 articles.
One on the 696 and 396 and another on the 69.
Then John Haviland wrote one about the 329PD.
The rest of the issue is interesting too.
Not only does my local target shop have it but at least one of the bigger supermarkets carries the Wolfe publications.
Not affiliated, just a fan.
This is the only mag I actually keep every issue of.

Are the articles more about S&W handguns, or more about reloading 44's?

Well the emphasis of the whole magazine is about reloading but in this case
Brian does go into the engineering differences of some of them.
Good stuff even if you don't reload.

He's one of my favorite reloading authors. Particularly interesting is his reconsideration of reloading for the 696, 396.

Brian Pearce knows his stuff. I enjoy his articles. I like Handloader and Rifleman.

Handloader magazine
Mine just came today too. Can't wait to sit down & read thru it.
When I'm done I scan my favorite articles into the computer, as a pdf, for quick reference later.
I only wish they were thicker & came monthly.

My copy just arrived 10 minutes ago. Why would they do an article on discontinued models? I do have a 696 and a Taurus 441, but I will have to read it all to make sense of the articles' concepts.

"Particularly interesting is his reconsideration of reloading for the 696, 396."
Perhaps because of a previous comprehensive article he did that put the 696 in with revolvers capable of higher pressures?

I have a 696 and a Taurus 441, so the article is in my purview. I found it helpful, although a lot of verbage was dedicated to the background concern about the power and velocity of loads used in these guns. Already knew the lore of my guns.
All my bullets are 200 gr, both lead and XTP, except for a 100 round box of 180 gr XTPs, which I guess I'll have to use in cooler loads.
What was also useful was that I have the powders mentioned, and I can use the loads provided.

Yikes! I saw the correction they had on page 10 about an article in the last issue. I went to find that issue & pen in that correction when I realized I must have never gotten that one !? (Guess the mailman's still reading it. ). No wonder it seemed like such a long time between issues.

Good magazine! Plenty of usable info, and, interesting articles. I do detect some subtle advertising in some of the articles, but that's a given, in return for furnishing supplies gratis.

FWIW
I let my subscription lapse by 4 issues...I know, I know.
Back issues are $9.99!, it cost more for the 4 that I missed than a 2 year subscription.
I took my medicine and learned my lesson.

Is that a 3rd Gen.?
Speaking of advertising, there's a Dillon ad on pg.14. A girl is holding a pistol in her hand. It took me a couple days to make it that high up on the picture , but it looks like an early model 3rd Gen with the stepped frame side. What do you think?

Has a safety (decocker?) and tactical sights, stainless frame and slide, DA type trigger.
addendum:
Think I've got it. Compare the picture to a S&W 5906.

I have a 296 and finding a load that doesn't make me want to throw it is an endless hunt. Can anyone share what the writer suggests for super light weights? (The gun, not me, of course)

I have gone as low as 4.5 grains of PB (with Grex filler).
You can use 4.5-5 grains of Bullseye as well with or without filler.
This is with a cast bullet in magnum cases.
At one time I searched for the lowest load that would shoot well
and I stopped at 4.5 grains as I did not want to stick a bullet
and it did shoot well with a soft, properly sized cast bullet.
I would not go that low with a jacketed pill.
6 grains of Unique is a pretty standard target load in the 44.
You can shoot jacketed or lead with that one.
You certainly won't damage anything as long as you make SURE
there is a hole in the paper for every time you pull the trigger.
When in doubt testing low loads look up the barrel every time.
I HAVE stuck a jacketed bullet doing this kind of stuff.
Edit: all the loads I mentioned will work fine in the Special case as well.
(just got home from a wedding reception and didn't think before
engaging keyboard).

396/696 load data

His article on the 396/696 basically backed away from his prior statement(s) of using up to 25K psi .44 Spcl. loads in these guns. His current chart only shows data for 15K psi (standard pressure) loads & mentions not exceeding 18K psi.

Simmer down-If I was looking for a milder but still effective (what ever ya want that to mean) practice load in light 296, might consider one of those full lead wad cutters.
Unique or VV N-350 will reproduce Speer's factory loading of their 200 Gold Dot loading, and can be found in the last Speer manual.
Course ya could sell/trade that 296 to someone who hasn't experienced the recoil of it yet. Maybe someone has a spare 696 to trade?

Seems somebody at the post Office like it, too.
Have to call Wolfe on Monday (again!)

As far as I am concerned, Two publications that are a must read, every month, are Handloader and Rifle. They are about the only gun rags that I will read from cover to cover(sometimes takes a couple of months to get to some of the stuff I don't have much interest in but I find every article to be well written and informative). Can't say the same for most of the other publications. Some months after reading the index and the question and answer sections of those mags., they go into the give away box.

You can get a Handloader as a PDF subscription. I swapped to digital 3 or 4 years ago. Just no place to stack those magazines anymore.

I sold the 696 because it was not fun. The 296 is the same amount of not fun but I love the body guard style.

I don't share everyone else's enthusiasm for the magazine so I can't tell you what is written in it... But if you need lighter loads you can try looking for data for the .44 Russian. That's what I did when I carried a Taurus 445 due to it's awful grip/frame design.

I found some data on Taffin's 6 gun site. He's got powders I usually use in 38 snubs, Bullseye, H38 and Clays.
Thanks.

...wonder how Trail Boss would work...it always seems to have a low-pleasant push in 3" sheriff model cowboy guns, along with anything else I've loaded with it....but I've never tried it in a 296.

Gotta say, I don't shoot a 3" gun for fun per se. My 696 is a regular carry and an outstanding choice for what I want.
