Default Chronograph Question

Is this a good enough chrono for testing handgun loads for Bullseye, IPSC, IDPA, Action Pistol, etc?

Shooting Chrony Beta Master Chronograph - MidwayUSA

Thanks!

Yes, absolutely. I have the cheapest version they make, the Alpha Chrony, and it has served me very well. Many will recommend you pay more and get the PACT instead.

Default Chronograph Question

Thanks, Dragon and Wyo!

I screwed up a while back and bought a PACT shot timer. I should have bought the unit that was chrono capable. Oh well, got more money than sense apparently! 8^)

I have an Alpha master Chrony and a ProChrono Pal. I no longer waste
my time setting up the Chrony. Mine is useless for hand gun loads.
Buy the Pal from Competition Electronics.

You probably aren't putting your Alpha Master out far enough away from the muzzle blast.

That's what the Chrony rep told me on the phone when I
called about the problem. So when I shot the da** thing after
moving it out to about 30 ft. I ordered another base unit.
Guess what?, it doesn't work either.

If you just read the reviews on Midway, the Competition Electronics ProChrono Digital is the way to go. One of those rare products with dozens of reviews and virtually all of them five stars.

Based on recommendations from this forum, I bought the CE from Midway a few months ago. Only used it twice, but it was real easy to set up and performs flawlessly. It was on sale for under $100 at the time.

I have had a bunch of different kinds. My Oehler 35 is the one I trust. If you are using your chrony to set up loads for IPSC and/or IDPA be sure and leave yoursef some leeway. Its not nice to get to a match and find that your chrony doesn't agree with the official match chrony, and you either find yourself shooting minor or disqualified.

I've used the el cheapo Chrony for about 20 years. Matches up with my friends Oehler within 5 fps. Sometimes he fast, sometimes the Chrony is. Anyway, being that close is fine with me.

If you want a backup 35P, you'll be happy to know that Oehler is making a special run of these:

I have / had two Chrony's. Work great. One was about 10 years old and my buddy shot it last year so I upgraded. Extremely simple, very accurate device so I don't know what someone could screw up. They have to be far enough awau from the muzzel to avoid muzzel blast. About 5 ft for a 35 special and about 15 for my 45-70.

I recently purchased a Beta Master from Cabella's. With discounts and points I had there it was well under 100 dollars. I have only used it once, so take all of this with a grain of salt.

I was shooting under cover at first and had a lot of errors due to the chrony not seeing the bullet. I moved to the end of line where there was more light and it worked fine.

If they say put the unit x number of feet away, that is what you want to do. I had it too close at first and spent more time waiting for the range to go cold to put the screens back on and start again. Once I got the distance figured out it was fine.

I really like the fact you can bring the disply to you on the bench, no trying to read the numbers from 10-15 feet away. I also like the fact that you can bring just the display up to the computer with its own 9v battery and get all of your numbers that way.

Once I moved from under cover, into full sunlight, it worked like a champ. It didn't miss a single shot.

As this is my first chrony I am happy with it, but it may be the happiness of ignorance.

YMMV
