Question Power Pistol in .357 ?

Anyone use Power Pistol in the .357 Magnum?

I'm looking for a mid-range load for 4" and under barrels using 125 gr JHP.
Trying to find a powder that's cleaner than Unique.

If you want clean, look at Vihtavuori powders. N320 or N340 would probably work well for what you're looking for.

Power Pistol is better with fairly warm loads. Tends to burn less clean with midrange loads (at least in 45ACP, 44Mag and 357Mag loads I've tried).

I use Power Pistol to replicate Speer's short barrel 135gr .357 Magnum ammo.

If you're looking for a substitute for Unique that burns cleaner try Universal. Universal was created as a alternative to Unique from what I've read. I use HS-6 and sometimes Longshot for mid-range .357 Magnum ammo.

Alliant Powder - Reloader's Guide

Alliant lists MAX loads so try 10% less.

Personnalky I would choose a faster burning powder for mid-range loads. For light loads with jacketed bulets I prefer American Select while with light lead bullet loads I enjoy using Trail Boss.

I use the max Alliant-listed Power Pistol .357 loading (8.0 grains - this is what they list for jacketed bullets, but cast bullets give lower pressures with jacketed loads) and a CCI magnum small primer under a 158-grain .357 LSWC from Tennessee Valley Bullets with a solid roll crimp. It's a decently accurate, moderate and clean .357 loading, and real pleasant out of my 3" K-frame: sort of giving .38/44 performance, a good easy-shooting .357 loading.

Out of the 3" 65-5, 36°F @ 5950'>sea level:
M 1147 fps/ES 28.46/SD 11.61.

Out of a 4" GP-100, 80°F, same range:
M 1226/ES 9.71/SD 4.35 fps

It's sort of one of those loadings that I try to always keep around. Just a good basic load.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've loaded up some Power Pistol @ 8.0gr, 8.5gr and 9.0gr. I'll see what happens at the range next week.

My starting point would be closer to 9.5 for 125 gn jhp.
