Thumbs up Longshot in the 45Colt

Anyone using this powder in the 45Colt?

I have a M25 -7 that I really don't want to beat up. Oh, it'll get a few of the Linebaugh loads, just not a steady diet of them.

I have two bullets that I am loading for. An H&G #502, 240gr LSWC and a Mihec copy of the RCBS 45-270-SAA.

The H&G weighs in at 250gr and the Mihec at 270gr with the round pins in. Looking for around 1000fps and 20,000psi. In Handloader magazine awhile back, Brian Pearce tested loads that range from 14,000psi to 30,000psi that also included a 20,000psi selection. There are loads for the 270-SAA in both extremes with Longshot, 950fps to 1200+fps but there is nothing in between.

I am going to take an educated guess and give it a try. Just wanted to know if I am treading ground already trod by someone else that would care to share.

What say you?

I don't have my Model 25 any more and the main reason I got rid of it was because I was afraid that one of my Ruger loads would eventually find its way into it.

I fixed that problem by buying an M29.

The hottest load I ever shot in the M25 was 9.0 gr Unique w/RCBS 255 SWC. That gun never did shoot all that well, I think the throats may have been too big but I never measured them.

Handloader #217 has the best article he has written on the .45 Colt (and in my opinion, the best by anyone period), but there isn't any data for Longshot in that article. I believe that the one Skip mentioned is in issue #246. He has done several articles though that have great data for light and mid-range loads in issues since that one in 217 that cover .44 Special, .44 mag, .41 mag, .45 Colt, and .454. Few of the have data for Longshot outside of 246 though.

There is a short note from Pearce in issue #230 on page24 in his "From the Hip" column that covers a warning from Hodgdon on using certain Longshot data in their 2004 manual. If anyone is uncertain about the data, they should contact Hodgdon.
