.38 S&W JHP load data?
Hello all,
I have a Victory model .38 S&W I'd like to reload for, using W231, CCI small pistol primers, and Sierra's 140gr JHP (#8325). Does anyone have a good starting load they'd suggest using these?

You might want to be very careful of using starting loads/light loads with that undersize jacketed bullet. There is a real risk of a bullet-stuck-in-bore malfunction.

Clearly, I have some more homework to do.  That's ok though, that's why I'm here, and I'm not in any hurry. I've recently begun reloading for my 9mm, and wanted to putter with the .38 over winter.

I never gave the undersize a thought when I made my recommendation. You would be better off using a lead bullet of .360 diameter or a 148 gr. HBWC that can open to fill the chamber mouths and bore. I cast my own bullets from old Ideal molds and size .360 for my old S&W, works very well. Missouri Bullet Company sells cast bullets specifically for the older 38 S&W cartridge. Google them for info.

I agree, you are better off using lead bullets for that revolver. After all, that's all they was being use back when the revolver was made. You might want to contact Jessie over at Tennessee Valley Bullets and see if he will make some up for you. He's a member here and produces a quality product. If not, try Missouri Bullets who has a .38 S&W bullet as a regular stock item. It's sized correctly and Brad produces a quality product too.

I agree with the fact that you should .360 diameter bullets in 38 S&W loads. A while back (several years ago) I experimented with 38 S&W loads using 110 grain Winchester JHP's. (I didn"t have any 360 diameter bullets) I don't remember the powder or charge, but it worked out real good. Using a WW11 S&W Victory revolver, I was able to hit a coke can at about 50 feet. I had no leading and felt good about the load. I purchased the revolver for $29.95 from Golden state Arms in 1958 when I was student at the University of Alabama. It was all that I could afford at the time and I still have the revolver in my collection.
