Default Roll crimp better for 45acp revolver vs taper crimp?

Since last year I've been using a Lee carbide die set in my 550b. Works perfectly with my 9mm and 45acp semi.

Just called to place an order for Bear Creek 200gr swc and the informative gentleman told me a crimp die would work better for speedloading situations in a revolver because it does away with the sharper edge of a tapered crimp.

Will it be worth spending the $15-$25 for one roll crimp? Will it be a bit more difficult to crimp as opposed to the very automatic carbide die taper crimp?

Does the 200 gr LSWC even have a cannelure? If not, there isn't much to "roll crimp" into?

I apologize. I am going with a 200 rn moly bullet.
The Lee carbide set has been a no-brainer and I had zero crimp or bulge or feeding issues all last year in two calibers. Then this talk of roll crimp gave me the uh-ohs because I've seen people with the aforementioned problems on stages and I was hoping there'd be a way around it, like someone would say "your carbide crimp die will be just fine."

But reality is better than going to the line with reloads that may hang up.

I shoot a 625-2 in competition, taper crimp 230 grain lead round nose, have shot thousands of rounds this way and have never had any problems with rounds hanging up on the reload at all. As OCD1 stated there is no crimping groove on these bullets to roll crimp into anyway.

I shoot a revolver(625JM) in both ICORE and IPSC . A moon clip, 230 gr round nose bullets and a lot of practice will make THE difference. The type of crimp wont matter

I would never use a roll crimp on a 45 ACP revolver. No cannelure and the possibility of using the ammo in my 1911 would make it a silly move

For normal 45ACP bullets shot in the revolver, what has been said is oh so true. It takes away all the imagination though!

"Imagine what can be done with a 45 caliber revolver bullet in this caliber!"

Well, here are a few examples:
The ones from center to right are all roll crimped because of bullet type. The ones on the left are taper crimped, again, because of type.

This one too is taper crimped and can be shot in either PT1911 or the M625JM.

Missour Bullets makes a 200 gr RNFP with a cannelure. It is actually a Cowboy action bullet but used for the Springfield XD's (not XD'ms) which do not like to feed SWC. I have used the bullet and it works great not only in the XD bit other 45's.

I guess the Flat nose makes a prettier hole or something

Missouri Bullet Company

Yama, I also use the Lee Factory crimp die on all my reloads so it crimps and post sizes the case in a separate step. I think that die is worth the few extra dollars. Yes it is a extra step but I feel it helps on all reloads more so with the semi autos.

I have 2 .45 autos in addition to my Model 625.
What I did was segregate out all my Winchester cases (they work well in moon clips) for revolver use.
As I use a Lee Classic Turret press, I got a Lee 3-die .45 ACP die set that resides in its own turret so I can leave my revolver setup on it. It does a roll crimp, which is fine for the cast bullets I use in the revolver.
The auto rounds are all jacketed and taper crimped in the 4-die set with the FCD.

Unless you changed out your seating/crimp die on the Lee 3 die set, It taper crimps. All Lee Semi Auto dies taper crimp all revolver dies roll crimp.
If your bullets have a cannelure even the taper crimp will force the brass into the grove but it's still a taper.

Lee Taper Crimp Die

The Lee Taper Crimp Dies is hardend steel designed to overcome crimp problems caused by poor die design. These dies offer little or no advantage when used wth 1986 or newer Lee Dies as the crimp angle is already modified taper crimp. Jacketed bullets must have a crimp groove.
The modified taper crimp will put a little roll into the crimp if you crank it down enough.

I have several of the older 25-2 and 625's and sometimes like using the ACP rounds without the moonclips. if I used a roll crimp on an ACP shell, I know I will have some misfires as the older guns headspaces on the case mouth and use of a roll crimp will cause the rimless acp brass to feed too deeply into the chamber. The auto rim will take anything just as long as you crimp to specs.

Buck,
That is the only scenario that I could think of that would negate the use of a roll crimp.

Of course, using 45ACP cases in a revolver without moon clips is about useless, in my opinion. It makes extraction is almost impossible unless it is a single action, such as the Ruger 45 Convertible that sports an ejector rod and CAN'T be uses with moon clips.

I have TONS of moon clips that stay loaded. I know certain loads are only for the M625JM because of the bullet used. But, maybe this 270gr will feed in the PT1911! Gonna have to check that out! If it does, I will have to use a taper crimp for sure!

Use a taper crimp for semi-autos. You will want to seat the bullet in one operation, and apply the crimp seperately in another operation. It really doesn't work well to try seating and crimping the bullet at the same time because you are moving the bullet as you try to seat it, and your crimps won't be properly applied.

I have the Lee 4 die FCD set in 45ACP & 45 Colt. When I load some 45AR cases & bullets with cannelures, I remove the crimping insert from the Colt FCD & substitute it in the ACP FCD, along with a spacer (I use a copper bushing, ~0.5" long by ~0.5" wide, as the Colt insert is shorter than the ACP's) to crimp them. Conversely, if I load some 45 Colt cases with bullets w/o cannelures (light to moderate loads) I do the substitution swap the other way. If you have the ACP FCD set but don't have the Colt FCD set, I read you can buy the 45 Colt's FCD crimp insert, along with the spacer, from LEE for a nominal fee, by calling & asking. That way you keep the FCD features, post-sizing & easy adjustments.
