Question ...reloading -> .45 200gr SWC (need advise)

Well, I went out today and attempted to shoot some of my second round of reloading.
.45 of 200gr SWC. (5gr of bullseye), but they had a FTF damn near every time.
Each time the gun cycled it would jam in to the breach and not seat.
hitting the bullet part of the cartrige right at that lump before the casing.
The seating depth was as showen (1.263)

========================================
I previously loaded up some of these and they were great!
.45 of 200gr LSWC. (4.7gr of bullseye) (seated at 1.254)
and they shoot GREAT!!! (but are a little light on the load).
but still cycle every time.

========================================
I wonder if the old school SWC just wont feed in my M&P 45C or ifI just need to seat them deeper...
I was thinking about seating them more to just about the turn of the bullet...
what do you guys say... this is where your experience counts!
please help me out...

It is likely that deeper seating of the SWC will help. One of the easiest preliminary tests is to pull the barrel from your pistol and drop the loaded rounds into the chamber and see if they seat fully without force. That test won't determine if you have the best seating depth for feeding from the mag and up the ramp into the chamber but it assures that the cartridges fit into the chamber.....which is often a problem.

treeman... already one step ahead of ya...
I shot 50 of them by doing just that...

worked on my 25yd shots that way...
they dropped right in and fired with out a hitch.

however, when the gun cycles...
and the mag is in with other rounds...
jams ever time!

What gun are you shooting them out of?

Generally speaking the LSWC should be seated so that just a tiny bit, (a thumbnail width) of the driving band should be showing. I seat my 180 gr Lswc at 1.250.

Whose bullet is the second one the flat nose? Is it the Missouri bullet?

Try this: Seat the TC bullet to the length that will feed, then simply switch bullets. That will make the SWC hit the feed ramp at the same angle as the TC bullet. Only do about 5 bullets or so.

I'm not sure you understood treeman's post. When he said "drop them in" he didn't mean to fire them. He meant to check the bullet similar to how you do with a case guage. A case guage is a useful tool for checking loaded semi auto rounds. They can be purchased from Dillon.

Your SWC, even the ones I sent, should look like this.

You can seat them as deep as flush with the case too. You will have to play with that to see what depth functions best in your pistol.

Believe it or not, folks used to spend $1000 for the newest Colt 1911 and no matter what length they tried still ended up sending them to a gunsmith so they could feed this profile bullet! My Taurus PT1911 will feed any of them and it only cost me $450 new!

The bullet profile you have in the SWC is a very accurate bullet BUT it is one that can be hard to get to feed too. Don't get frustrated though, it will be worth it if you get them to shoot.

p.s. As OCD1 asked, what gun are you shooting them out of? Also, on the SWC, there is a tad too much crimp on them. When you seat them in the removed barrel, the case should be flush with the "hood" of the barrel. If you need a picture, let me know, I'll try to find one.

Found one. Gonna work all day today and may not get back to this thread until tomorrow late so:

Your OAL is too long. Cut it down by 1/2.

By 1/2 WHAT, John? Are you talking about the shoulder sticking out or 1/2 of 1.263" or ???????

He is a fairly new reloader and will need more information than that friend.

After you shorten you OAL, and redo you length test, if you still have issues , I would :

1) Try a different mag

2) alternate factory ball rounds over your reloads in the mag. ( ie. top down: ball, reload, ball, reload, ball, reload) Feed and fire the ball round to see if it properly ejects and cycles one of your reloads into the chamber , if it does, you likely have a powder/power related issue.
Additionally, if your reloads seat but fail to cycle your ball ammo on fireing, it would also point to a power issue.

OAL is way too long on that SWC. Try 1.255 or 1.25.

Yep, this is good advice. Also notice that his OAL on the TC bullets is 1.253, which is a more reasonable number for any bullet with that ogive, the SWC included.

I think if you just leave the seating die depth at whatever it is that works for the TC bullet, you'll be good to go with the SWC.

Default Roll crimp?

Look at those top pictures...looks like a roll crimp to me, unless there is something funny about the lighting or angle.
The second set of pics. look to have a proper/taper crimp.
Anybody else seeing this?

I see a heavy roll type crimp also.

I also agree....reduce OAL (meaning at or below 1.250)

and adjust crimp to just close the belled mouth or just slightly beyond that.

It is difficult for me to mic my crimp.....so I do it by look and feel. I mainly load target velocity 200LSWC in 45acp.

if I feel it needs a tad more or less....I adjust the die slightly until I get the desired crimp.

this is an example of the crimp on 9mil. I blew up the pics so you can see the slight crimp.

OAL is super important with 45 ACP SWC's has has been stated above. You also want to make sure your chamber and feed ramp are not all gunked up. That could also prevent the rounds from seating in the chamber.

Exclamation Roll Crimp...

Agreed. Roll Crimp is not conducive to functioning of a round that head spaces on the case mouth. I'd taper crimp if I crimped at all.

You are not going to get lead poisoning. I think you are loading Rainier 200 gr SWC bullets by looking at the pictures. Your problems have a simple fix. Over all length is 1.247 to 1.252 inches. 1.250" is the goal. The case diameter at the TAPER CRIMP is 0.469" . I don't believe you can taper crimp to 0.468" and if the case mouth is 0.472 you don't have enough taper crimp.

After shooting 5,000 Rainier 200 gr SWC bullets through 9 different 1911s, I found out what works 100% of the time. Is this enough data?

A too-heavy roll crimp can also cause the case behind the crimp to bulge which can inhibit feeding and chambering.

I couldn't get SWCs to feed in my Glock 30 regardless of COL or how much shoulder was/wasn't exposed. I finally decided that punching a nice hole in paper wasn't worth the irritation and converted to LRNs. "Most" of the G30 issues went away.

I've thought about trying them again in my 4566 (it feeds rocks and BBs), but don't feel like resetting the dies just for pretty holes. 230 LRNs it shall remain.

shooting the rounds out of my (M&P.45C).
both the LSWC and the SWC are RAINIER BULLETS.

After review the notes and feedback I will get back in the shop and reduce the seating to 1.24-1.25 (a finger nail).
that makes sense... thx guys!

Good luck. The Rainier SWC is not a faithful copy of the H&G #68 plus plating and I never could get them to run reliably in guns set up for the cast bullet, no matter what the OAL or crimp.

well got them reseated at 1.195..........
They manually cycle very well.........
hope I dont explode this weekend.

I have about 4.8-5.0 gr of bullseye in there...
with those PAIN-IN-THE-*** - SWC.
(never getting those B@$t@r&'s again!)

sticking with the LSWC (the tee-pee with the top flattened)
or just your good reliable RN.

damn this hobby demands precision....
Thanks to you guys the learning curve is a bit increased.

Good!

Can't wait until we hear how they shoot!

p.s. The "teepee" bullet is called a TC bullet by the way. "L" stands for lead, "T" for truncated and "C" for cone. Since those are plated, I have used PTC to describe them, Plated Truncated Cone.

Hope this helps!
