Default 460 & 500 Reloaders

Thinking about trying a .460 or .500--probably nuts since I'm a little recoil sensitive.

Mind telling me what it costs you per cartridge to reload a round--factories I've seen are crazy price wise.

Thanks,

Steve

The big variable is what you pay for the bullet. Assuming you buy in reasonably large quantities:

Case: 4-6 cents (pro-rated)
Primer: 3 cents
Powder: 6-12 cents

Figure 13-27 cents plus the cost of the bullet. Cast your own out of scrap wheelweights given to you by your buddy at the tire store and you can shoot your .500 for less than 15 cents a round.

Buy jacketed and add 50-80 cents to your cost per round. Buy cast bullets in bulk from a commercial caster and maybe split the difference.

That help?

I reload for the 500 in my Handi-rifle and shoot either plated or hard cast lead gas check bullets. I can have them delivered to my door for under 35 cents each, plus 4 cents for the primer and 6 cents for the powder.

pretty much what he said. For my 460, I mostly use Hornady's 200 gr FTX bullet at about 50 cents each. I'll sometimes load some light loads with Hornady 250 gr XTP, ant that bullet is around 28-30 cents

I dont think your going to find cases for .05 no one sells once fired that I have ever seen even close to this price...new cases are .50-.90 depending on who makes them with starline being the cheap co...
.50 case
.04 primer
powder 7000 grains to a pound (say .30 grains per charge) =233 per pound @ around 22 per pound= .10 per charge
440 grain gc bullet from leadhead $84 for 250 plus 20 for shipping=104 so your looking at 41 cents a pop for the bullet

1.05 per shot if you reload (top line cost but the brass is good for 10+ times so bottom line cost is around .55 cents per shot...yes you can cast but you need to factor in the cost of the equipment and the fact that what your going to wind up with is not a gc bullet...

just my .02

Thanks for the replies everyone--looks like reloading is the ONLY WAY TO GO.

You've helped a lot--now the hunt is on for a good used .460 or .500--have to save some funds so I'm in no hurry.

Steve
