Default .460 s.w. 240gr XTP Horady Jacket seperation past 1850fps?

I am getting ready to reload .460s.w. bullets. I have H110 powder. Large magnum rifle primers. Hornady 240gr XTP mag bullets. I am reading that you can not exceed 1850fps on thes bullets due to jacket separation? Is this true? Does anyone have the answer to this question? I guess i should write Hornady.

How would you know if the jacket seperated at 1850fps, multiple holes in the target? H110 is good but not so for light loads, im baseing that statement onmy 44 mag. reloading book, it says touse 105 for lighter bullets not 110 not sure if the info is caliber specific or not. It is hard to find a light bullet that doesnot go warp speed in this caliber, I thought the mag version of this bullet was made for this.

Are you sure you are not thinking of the 250 gr XTP meant for .45 LC? Hornady themselves lists velocities of 2000fps in their own reloading manual for the 240 gr XTP-MAG.

I can tell you the .452 250 gr XTP for the Long Colt holds together well pushed to 2075 fps. I use it for my full power plinking/ groundhog loads. 2 inch groups at 100yds and makes ground ground hog. Both in 8 3/8 and 12 inch XVRs.

Call Hornady Customer Service for an answer to the separation question.

I did speak to hornady today. ok..... Their is a xtp 240 gr .452 bullet and a xtp 240 .452 mag bullet. The mag is meant for the .460xvr as i suspected. I argued on another forum with a guy who was hell bent on not shooting any xtp 240gr .452 bullet past 1850, Hornady said this mag xtp can be pushed to 2200fps. Thanks for all the comments. Anyone have some good recipets for the 460XVR? going to be reloading here in a week.

The Hodgdon website has some good recipes for the XTP-MAGS on their website. They are a bit stout tho....I recommend you start at the starting load and watch for sticky extraction as you work up. Flattened primers are normal for the .460.

Hodgdon - The Gun Powder People

The Hornady manual is also a very good reference for their bullets. They are a bit more on the conservative side with starting loads, but their max is about the same.

You do NOT need to push the .460 to max for it to be effective. My X-Frame is very sensitive to small changes in powder charge. It doesn't take much sometimes to go from a pleasant shooting round to one that the empties need to be pushed out with a dowel. Heavy, consistent crimps are a must...... not only to keep the bullets from movement under recoil, but for best accuracy when H110/W296 is being used. I trim my new and once fired brass before loading to make sure crimps are consistent and check them for length before reloading them again. Also....the brass will last longer when loads are moderate.
