Default Got my Beta Chrony today

Checked it out using my BB pistol (the neighbors might complain about anything else) 258 fps....

Now if I can just keep from shooting it with the 9mm!

Been there. I had an old Pro Tach chronograph that was a a single long plastic unit with sensors at both ends. One day I found out how easily a 45 slug will pass through one. Was not a good day. Back then, about 20 years ago, those puppies were expensive.

Another hint (I think they mention it in the destructions)

Buy some wood dowels the size of the metal rods that hold the sky screen plastic things. That way if you shot hit one it will not destroy the unit as the wood will just snap . The metal rod will take the unit with it.

I made some for mine and had to sand the ends to get them to fit

+1. Bamboo skewers work great. I bought mine at the grocery store. Got a pack of 100 for a couple of bucks.

Great idea on the skewers! I have a few laying around here somewhere.

I shoot unsupported through my chrony all the time. If you aren't confident in your trigger control and flinch control, use a rest.

Only time my chrony has been hit was when I let someone else use it. They hit a rod which destroyed the rod and nothing else luckily. Lesson learned. Don't let other people use your chrony.

acl864, great tip! I've been using dowels for years now (I've got a great mess of them rubber-banded together in a tube - I used to sand the ends down, but now I just pull out the Kershaw and whittle them on the spot to what's needed) and they work like a charm, but simply buying bamboo skewers would be the cat's pajamas.

My old Pro Tach still works but does have a slight groove in the top! Mikerault, good purchase, you will find it a usefull tool.

I still have one that works too. It replaced the one I destroyed. I also have all the parts from the old one that didn't get damaged. The way I shot mine was somebody that was watching me (the ex-wife) bumped me as I pulled the trigger. She was writing down the data as I shot. No that isn't the reason she is my ex if you are wondering.

Attached a photo of my old sky screen guides from a time I let someone borrow it. They are not welcome to use it anymore.

Ouch.

+1 on the dowel or bamboo skewers idea- I sit and shoot with my forearms on my knees for added stability. I've never hit a screen rod, but going forward no need to push my luck. If a bee landed on my knee at the wrong time it wouldn't be the bee's knee.

Better yet---use plastic soda straws from a fast food restaurant. To place on the Chrony you use a plastic coffee stirrer that you build up just enough, with masking tape, so it fits inside the soda straw. I use red & blue ones.
