Default What's a 147 9mm feel like?

Currently shooting 130gr moly 9mm atop a low charge of WST. Thinking of going to a 147 moly atop a relatively low charge of WST.

What will the 147 feel like compared to the 130? Both the same kind of push as opposed to the snappier 124gr I no longer use? Six grains heavier and I think it's a world of diff from the 124 to 130 but is is safe to presume the 130 vs 147 will be twice as muted in terms of a quicker feel?

All things being equal will I notice a difference in felt recoil and muzzle rise with a 147?

Sorry, can't help you on that one. Out of all the 9mm guns I have and ammo I have shot, I never shot a 147 gr. Only 115 and 124/125.

I think a lot will have to do with what gun you are using.

Yes, generally heavier bullets have more felt recoil, but the 147 is a lot slower so maybe it will balance out.

Just curious, why 147? I believe most loads are "sub sonic"

There is a lot of discussion and or controversy over the 147 in 9MM as far as penetration, stopping power and all that blah, blah stuff.

Only one way to find out.

Loaded XTP 147 with 3.5 gr of Titegroup and took them to the range last week. On paper this is a 900 fps load and about 27,000 CUP.
Ran them through an M&P 9C (3" barrel) and my wife and I agreed the recoil was more "push" than "snap" and it can return to the POA in a hurry.

I fired some 124gr and 147gr at the range recently and found no difference. Of course this was in a G19, which when held correctly and firmly offers a very high level of control compared to some other pistols.

147gr are a waste of time in the 9mm IMO. Of course I like 124gr and you said you don't like those, so I probably can't help you. Try them and find out.

It's purely for idpa and uspsa. Enough to make power factor and be accurate but soft shooting so I get quicker return on front sight.

There's an active controversy about using 124gr vs 147gr in IDPA/SSP and USPSA Production. The answer depends on who you ask.

While the heavier bullet can be run at slower speeds and make power factor (momentum), the perception by various shooters varies widely.
Some shooters want the recoil as soft as possible, but don't consider the longer cycle time of the gun.
Some shooters, like one very vocal Grand Master at Tulsa, says the sluggish slide throws off his timing and he can run faster splits with 124gr. I'm nowhere near as fast overall as he, but I also shoot 124gr at 130 PF and have no problem controlling the gun. The second shot of the double tap is shot as soon as the front sight drops back onto the target.

You pays your money and you makes your choices.

Default 147gr

The 147 gr 9mm round was first developed as a sub-sonic 9mm round for the suppressed H&K MP5. No sonic crack and a suppressor and it sounds like a BB gun. It is supposed to go slow and hit hard at close range

Subsonic 147 grain ammo is a speciality item for supressed weapons. Federal HST P9HST2 standard velocity runs right at 1000 fps, +P P9HST4 runs 1050 fps. Both are excellent self defense loads but so are the 124 grain loads or even a good bullet 115 grain. At one time the 147 grain had an edge in pentration but with modern good bullets all perform about equal. I like the 147's for the same reason I like 158 grain .38 Specials because I am somewhat old school and just like heavier bullets. I don't feel any 9mm has excessive recoil but I have shot a lot of .40 S&W and .45 ACP also and a lot depends on the firearm.

I have loaded the GS 147gr for my Marlin Camp over an apparently compresed charge of Power Pistol - this by manuals data. quite a 'whack' on steel disks at 50 yds. shot maybe 50 of them but have some unloaded slugs 'set back' for later use, to try for group off a rest on paper. I have no doubt they will shoot good as the 124gr GS does fine.

I've been where you are.
For years I shot a 147gr Zero over 3.something grains of TG.
Then I discovered VVN320 and started using that.
Then I started using 124gr Montana Golds over my newly discovered VVN320; and now the world is good.
I like the VV powder because it's not as temperature sensitive, cleaner burning, and less smokey than TG but it is about twice the price.
As for the bullet weight it kinda depends on the gun as to what the round feels like.
I shoot a GLOCK 34 as a "game gun".I feel that the 124gr gets that longer slide moving faster and the little bit of quick flip had me back on target faster than the push of the 147gr bullets. The 147 load made me feel like I was waiting for the gun to catch up.
Now that's just the 34...If I shoot GLOCK 17 I prefer the 147gr bullet. Yes I know the slides weigh the same. It's just the way those two rounds feel to me in my guns.

I too use 147 gr. jacketed bullets and heavy charges of Power Pistol. Out of my 940 snub I get velocities that will equal if not exceed the magical Buffalo Bore .38 Special 158 gr. +P loading. Anybody who thinks 147 gr. bullets in the 9mm are a waste of time needs to reevaluate his position.

Spent the afternoon testing 125 moly, 130 moly, 135 moly and 147 moly atop WST to make a 125 PF easily.

My shot timer shows I am easily the quickest with the 125moly and the most accurate. The 147 was my second favorite. Didn't feel too much different than the 135.

I shoot a Glock 34 in USPSA, to me 124 gives me faster splits and return to targer is much snappier. 147 felt recoil was slightly less, but return to target was slower. Lets face it, 9mm recoil in any gun legal for USPSA production at minor or near-minor power factor is not going to be significant, no matter if it is 115 gr or 147 gr. How quickly the gun returns to target is important. That being said, if you personnaly feel better shooting 147gr, and some do, then that is what you should shoot. Some people think a marginal hit on a popper with 147gr will take it down, where 124 gr. might not.
