Need Load Data For 41 mag Model 58

I have a Model 58, 41 mag, 4in, which I want to load with 210 gr Keith style bullets. I don't want to load max loads nor anything real mild. Could use for home protection if needed, puch some holes in paper or to wack an occasional deer at 15 yds, more or less. I have plentty of Unique & W231.

I can't find load data in the normal load books I have for Keith style bullets.

Try the Lyman handbook. They'll have some in there. If that's not to your liking try hodgdon.com and go to the data center.

Good morning
The origonal sights were regulated for a 210 grainer at about 900 fps. The 41 revolver was designed as a police weapon with more fight stopper than the 38 special.
So if you were to load 7 grains Unique behind that 210 grainer you are going to be right close to origonal load with plenty of zap to discourage any house prowler. Might shoot a shade high .. but at 10-20 feet it just will not be that much.

My load for my Model 58 is 8.0 grains of Unique behind the 210 grain cast SWC.

I use 8.0 grs. of Unique for several different bullets. Going from 7.0 to 9.0 grs. the 8.0 gr. just seemed more accurate for each one.

If the bullets you are using are real "Keiths", you can use data for other SWCs. Not every bullet that is advertised as a Keith style really is, but it does help them to sell better.

I remember the 41 Keith bullets to be in the 220-230 range. There should be a law against calling every swc a Keith.

I substituted "Keith style" 210 gr @ 0.410" dia SWC, for the SWC's his data had in it.

Powder: Unique @ 8.0 gr
Case : WW trimmed to 1.280"
Primer : Reminton 2.5 LP
COL : 1.594" roll crimped at Groove
Vol : Est @ 1075 (best guess from load data)

I hope this is not considered a hot load for this pistol???? I don't want to hurt this pistol or myself!!

I just started re-loading, so if any of you see anything wrong with the data please inform me. I plan on testing the loads out soon. I haven't fired this pistol in many years and re-loading makes me want to try out some of these pistols that have been lying around collecting dust. I have attached a picture of the loads & pistol. Like anyone is interested.

Should be OK. check for obvious signs of excess. I use 7.5 gr Unique in cases cut to 1.16" = .41 Special load and have checked for accuracy up to 8.5 gr with no ill effects, but 7-7.5 was more accurate in my gun. The old timers had a tendency to overclock their loads (pre magnum).
The # 410459 is the Lyman Keith @ 220 gr. Original Keith's have square cut grease groves.
As always, work up your loads.

No one likes 231? A 220gr keith over 6.8grs of 231 is very accurate & fun to shoot.

The original Keith bullet in .41 was 220 grains...if you look the Sectional Density for all Keith bullets are the same... 160 .357s and 250 .44s...maybe he knew something...

I settled on 8 grains of Unique as a target load for any bullet back in the 1970s....for some reason this seems to be the magic number with Unique/.41s...

Keith 220 cast from linotype metal so it weighted 211 grains...25 yards. The one out was called...



Berry's Plated 210 grain at 50'. First shot on the blank target was used for the aiming point for the other 5....



Model 58...



First 6 shots from the gun DA at 10 yards...the out one was the first shot and my fault...



1964 Model 58 with Berry's bullet...18 rounds at 10 yards DA...out shot was again the first round and my fault...



70s vintage 58 10 yards with the Berry's load....



Shoots right to POA with the fixed sight guns...

Velocity is 950+- from a 4" gun... 7.0 grains of Win 231 is also excellent and about 900 fps....

IIRC, the COAL for a Keith SWC (410459) is 1.7" when crimped in the crimping groove. The traditional weight of this bullet is 220gr. Generally speaking, 215gr. and 210gr. bullets are usually not Keith bullets, just generic swcbb bullets.

When I reloaded for my 4" M-57 I initially used 8 grains of Unique, I found unburned powder granules in the cases. Cut back to 7.5, solved that problem.

My UNIQUE loads are:
8.0 grains of UNIQUE--This duplicates the "Old Police Load".
5.0 grains of UNIQUE--My PPC load.

Will the 8.0 Unique take down deer?
I will try out the 5.0 gr & the 8.0 next time I re-load. I haven't had a chance to try out the ones I just loaded. Thanks for all the help. Please excuse the fact that I am not used of working in a forum format not knowing how to use the tools here.

8.0 grains of Unique will run bullets in the 200-220 grain range from 925-1000 fps from a 4" barrel depending on the bullet. From what some of the posters have said over on the 24 Hour Campfire, yes slow moving hard cast bullets will punch a hole through a deer and kill it but all you have is a hole punch so you may be in for a tracking job.

For a bullet I would suggest the 230 grain Keith style bullet from Leadhead Bullets. It has the largest meplat of any Keith design and runs 1000 fps even from my 4" S&Ws with 8.0 grains of Unique.

I personally like a bullet moving along a little faster and use 12-13 grains of SR4756 for 1250+- fps depending on the bullet or 21-23 grains of H110 for 1300-1400 fps....

But yes it will kill a deer and makes a dandy self defense load also...

I have recently changed over to 6.5 grs of Titegroup with a 215gr LSWC. This load is shooting great out of my 4" model 57 and I chroned it right at 1250fps and the recoil is mild. It sounds like there are alot of good loads on here as well.
