Default Reloading specs for the 41 mag???

I looked in my reloading manuals for the spec's to load my 41mag using the 215gr SWC leadcast bullets with the Unique gun powder. I don't see any loads for the 215gr swc bullet in the books.

My next step is to do a search on the net and i few loads came up but i would like to double check it before i use it without being sure.

215gr swc bullet Leadcast

Unique gun powder between 7.8 gr(979 fps) to 10.4 gr(1214fps).

Winchester WLP primer

Does this sound correct? I'm thinking of going with 8.0 grs of unique with the 215gr swc leadcast bullet. I don't want to go too high and have a leading problem. Plus i want a light load to play with. Thank's, Bill

I have been loading for the 41 for over 30 years. 7.0 of Unique and a cast swc is my standard load.

I've shot a lot of 215gr LSWC bullets on top of 7.8grs of Unique but have not ran them over the chrono. They should be similar to the 7.0gr of W231 that I have chrono'd at 956 fps from a 4" 657 Mountain revolver as the "feel" is very similar.

I have ran a 9.5gr Unique load behind the 215gr LSWC over the chrono from the same 4" pistol and it averaged 1,157 fps. I didn't get any leading but do add a light coat of Lee's liquid Alox over the standard commercial cast bullet.

Exclamation

I've posted this many times. All cast SWCs are not created equal. Do not use max load data for the 220gr Lyman 410459 , which has a short shank and lots of mass in the big long nose , which equals more powder capacity. Other cast SWCs like the common 215gr bevel base SWC most companies sell have more of a shank to the bullet and will cause a compressed load and high pressures if yer not careful.
