Default Lead Melting Pot

Im realize that cast iron is preferred, but why can't you use a stainless steel or aluminum pot?

Stainless would probably work, but I've had aluminum pots melt on the Coleman stove.
Besides, isn't there a link to Alsheimers with aluminum cookery? I'd hate to get aluminum poisoning in my lead souffles!

+1 on the aluminum pot ! The melting point of aluminum is not enough higher than that of lead to guarantee you won't wind up with a terrible mess on the floor. Don't use it.

I have never seen a cast stainless steel pot for sale. I’m pretty sure the two biggest factors for using a cast iron pot are that the cast iron is pretty affordable and that it holds some of the heat better than any other available similar type of pot.

Cheap imported cast iron pots from asia show up every so often. I think I paid $7 for mine (new) last year.

Cast iron is preferable because it will keep and distribute heat better than anything else.

Stainless steel is fine also.

Believe it or, not a great cheap alternative for melting lead are the surplus ammo cans. The one that is used for the 50cal or the 45cal is a good size. You can even keep the cover partially closed to keep the melt hotter until you are ready to ladle. I have been using the same can over a fish fryer for over two years and it's doing fine....Just a little rust where the green paint has been burned off. In fact, the rubber seal is still there.....Would have thought that it would have melted long ago!

Go to the hardware store and buy a 4" cast iron pipe cap, works fine and is cheap.
