Default HS-6 and the 170 gr LSWC

I have some nice 170 gr LSWC's I'm trying to find a load for using HS-6 for the 357. Lyman's latest cast Bullet Handbook shows HS-6 as one of the powders on nearly every bullet shown for the 357 except the weight/style I have(Lyman #358429). I guess I could interpolate between the 160 and 180 gr but would like more substantial data. I have several pounds of this powder and would like some load data for it but not even Hodgdon has it listed. Anyone know of another source?

No one's ever loaded this weight bullet with HS-6 before? Surely someone has.

if you load the 358429 bullet in a magnum case the oal length will be too long depending upon what revolver you are using it in. I think Elmer design the bullet for use in 38 special case. even using a standard 158 grain swc comes real close to the end of the cylinder in a M-28 with no more than .020 clearance

It's well below flush, don't know exactly how much, in my GP-100...perhaps 1/16" anyway. There's loads for that bullet in many sources for 357-just not with HS-6.

Lyman Cast Handbook 4th Edition has data for a 160gr and 180gr bullet but strangely enough no HS-6 data with the 170gr bullet like you said. That data if you look at it closely will tell you what you need to know. First off you can safely use the data from a heavier bullet of a similar profile with the slightly lighter bullet. (as in 180gr and 170gr) Even better are the charge numbers for the 160gr and 180gr bullets. The 160gr bullet lists HS-6 with a min/max of 8.5gr and 9.7gr. The 180gr bullet lists HS-6 with a min/max of 8.6gr and 9.5gr. IMO it's safe to say you can easily use the 180gr load data since both are so close and the Max will probably be 9.6gr because of the above numbers being so close. (but of course don't start there) Both the 170gr bullet and 180gr bullet they show seem to have similar profiles which is also a plus.

Please just use my data as information and don't do anything you think is unsafe. I'm just relaying what I would do in this case. I hope this helps a little...

Thanks for that info. It pretty well sums up what I thought. I can't help wonder in a case like this what QUICKload would recommend. For $150 it should show some interesting data. I'm still chewing on getting this software.
