Default Any 44mag loads for 200 cast lead?

I can't find anything on this combo. I've got a big box of this round nose lead but can't find a starting place for powder.

I did search and finally I found this page, Reloading Pages of M.D. Smith
that has a lot of cast lead loads. I'll try Trail Boss, titegroup, and Clays in small batches creeping up the scale and see what happens w/the 200 lead.

I shoot 200 gr. RNFP bullets in my .44 Magnum all the time. I like Unique, 7.5 gr. is a nice medium powered plinking load and 9.0 gr. is a little more lively. I use Winchester WLP primers, no need for magnum primers.

I cast a 200gr LRNFP from a Lee 6 cavity mould. I use it in my Marlin 1894 rifle and my M629 Classic with a 5" barrel.

Now, my loads are much warmer than the ones posted above so, what are you going to be shooting them out of?

The load I have is using a full charge of H110. From the Marlin, I get and average of 1943fps with an ED of 50 and SD of 17. This will shoot into 1 1/4" @ 50 yards. The same load from the 5" revolver develops an average of 1475fps.

These are not for sissies nor firearms in poor repair.

I've used 7.5 grains of 231 with 200 grain bullets for a nice light target load, very easy to shoot.
For full power I usually go with 240 grain bullets.

Using commercially bought 200 lrnfp, 44 mag brass, Fed 150 primer and 4 in Blued Mt. Gun.

7.5 grains hp-38 = 920 fps
8.0 grains hp-38 = 990 fps (most accurate tried)
8.0 grains Red Dot = 1083

It took some pressure to get good accuracy from the hard cast bevel base bullets. I suspect the Lee version is better.

I have a tight 29-2 w/ a 4" barrel. I'm not looking to curl my eyebrows so my goal is not max. I've been shopping for a lever action 44 mag to try some of these reloads. Veering off topic- Rossi makes a less costly gun than Marlin but I still think recycled metal when I think about Rossi. I don't need one more gun so maybe I'll keep scanning the used market until a Marlin shows up.

I just picked up some 200gr RNFPs from my local pusher. These are for use in my as yet unfired by me, Rossi /Puma 92.
I plan on using 9.2gr of Unique and 7.1 grains of Red Dot. The Unique load is a good shooting load with 240gr LSWCs out of my own 6" 29.

I have yet to try the Red Dot load as I just found it yesterday on LoadData while doing the same search you performed.
However, a friend said it is comparable in shootability to the Unique load. Although it is reloading season here in The Great White North, if it is mild enough this week, I intend to give both loads a try.

As for the Rossi/Puma 92, I have another one in .454 Casull and while I haven't put any screamers through it as yet, they received a positive review regarding strength and durability on LeverGuns. I don't think there is anything to be worried about in that regard

8.5 grains of Alliant Power Pistol under a 200 grain RNFP (I use Laser Cast) is an awesome load in the .44 Mag. I use it in my 2 5/8" Model 629 PC.

Accurate and sweet to shoot

Post your Rossi try-outs. I see the 92s around and a pawn shop quoted me $406 for a new one. If today wasn't Sunday I'd be down there making a payment. The urge is high today. I got to call my sponsor.

The stainless Rossi is a pretty nice gun. They sell a bunch of them down here. The fit, finish and materials appear to be very good. The only part i do not care for is the fragile looking safety lever on the top. Looks like it would break easily. Both the 357 and 44 sell like crazy.

The Rossi's go like hotcakes up here. There are always new ones for sale, but used ones are as scarce as hen's teeth and are snapped up real quick.

Used ones go for about $450 here, and new ones for up to a couple hundred more. So, $406 new is a real bargain from a Canadian point of view.

I'll be sure to bring my camera to the range with me this coming weekend when I try my .44 trapper model out...of course, Old Man Winter permitting! (we just had another snow/ice storm a couple of days ago, school buses were cancelled and the snow banks at the end of the driveway are about 6 ft high)

The weather was nice last weekend and I put 3 loads through the Rossi.

Load #1 consisted of the 200gr RNFPs with 7gr of Red Dot. That load printed as I would expect buckshot to do at 50 yards! There was no discernible group on the paper; just random holes.

Load #2 consisted of the 200 grainers again, but ahead of 10gr of Unique. This put 5 rounds into 4.5 inches at 50 yards. This load was interesting in that group size was affected by fliers which opened them up. I intend to try this load again, and more extensively to see if it's just me, or the load itself.

Load #3 was used just out of curiosity and convenience because I had a whack of them in the gun room for my Model 29; 9 grains of Unique ahead of a 240gr SWC. And, surprise surprise! It fed as slick as corn through a goose. What's more, since this was just shot as a novelty and I only brought 10 to the range, I fired them offhand at 50 yards. They produced a group of 5 inches.

So, I've got more load development ahead to see what works best, but for now, the two Unique loads will suffice for plinking.

ETA: I should add that I used WLP primers for all three loads.

Default 44 Mag Loads

I have been using Power Pistol in many revolvers in place of Unique.
I like it as it meters better, much cleaner burning and is the same price.
I have found Alliant powders to sell for at least $5.00 a LB cheaper and
are much easier to find then the Accurate brands that I also had been using.
I do a lot of shooting at my local indoor range and find that with Power Pistol
I can get where I want to be with both 44 special and 44 mag lots less powder in the special of course.
The data is not as available as with Unique, but if I look I seem to find what I need. YMMV

None to speak of. I cranked out a 44mag from a 20" rifle @ 1900fps. (240g lead with 24g of 4227) I think the chrony is faulty due to light issues. That sort of speed should cause quick leading but I don't see it yet.

I should have asked before ---- Did you chrono this load out of your 629? I'm curious what it would run in a 4". I was actually starting to chrono 9.0 grains of PP behind a 200 gr XTP when my chrony suffered a fatal malfunction.
