Question Adjusting case activated Hornady LNL for 9mm

Please tell me how you have adjusted your Hornady LNL progressive case activated powder measure for the 9mm. I have reloaded over 6000 rounds of 9mm. But it is the caliber I have the most trouble with.

I am having trouble with some 147 g molly bullets and want to make sure I have been using the powder measure correctly. I want to know, for sure, I am getting the most consistent throw.

I have used AA #7, a recommended powder for that bullet weight, and have good results, but I am going to use different powder weights. I check frequently the powder weight, but still get soft rounds. And yes, a couple of times got a bullet stuck in the barrel. That is a different issue. (me) The 9mm more than any other caliber.

Thank you.

My goodness you are having problems with those bullets

I can not help you with the LnL but the bullets you sent me, I loaded at 1.130 as it was closest in shape to the FMJ 147 gr. I used the load i wrote you of Unique. I used the max of Unique and they were accurate and almost no recoil. They cycled my Sig which will not work with wimpy loads.

The AA#7 load for a 147 gr lead bullet (of different profile) per Lyman is 6.3 to 7.1 grs.

The 147 gr is not going to be a crack bang load in a 9 mm. But that's why they use it. The heavy weight and slower speeds still give you your power factor or whatever.

Red face

I posted this thread, not about the 147 g moly, but the 9mm. For the 9mm, even with the powder measure sitting on the shell plate, the powder arm goes up only 90 degrees or so. For the 9mm I unscrew the powder measure tube a bit to gain greater movement. For the 9mm I have become aware that my loads are not consistent. Or as accurate as I would like them to be. Same thing really.

I have put some washers to act as spacers on top the L-N-L Powder Measure Handgun Powder Sleeve which raises the dispenser up a bit more. This seems to work very well.

I was hoping someone could say they have done this or offer some other ideas about 9mm & case activated powder measures.

I have used the 9mm only for 2010 and this year for USPSA production. Before that I used 40 S&W. The M&P 9 Pro lead me down the dark path. I like the pistol but I got to get better bullets.

PS OCD1, at 7.1 grains of AA #7 those 147 g bullets go crack bang! No pressure signs.

Give Hornady a call. They are very helpful and you will get a kick out of their answering message!

You need to lower the powder measure so there are about 3.5 threads below its mounting bracket.

Empty the powder, and lay the complete assembly with linkage intact but the spring removed on your bench.

Loosen the two screws which hold the upper assembley tight in its threads. Lower the powder body so you have about 3.5 threads showing below the bracket (above the drop tube).

While still on the bench, use a case to activate the measure to check your travel before tightening everything back up.

Red face Boy, is my face red.

I checked my powder measure. It is adjusted just as Postman10mm described. I called Hornady. They tried to be helpful. Sent me a part diagram by email. I realized I am not asking the question right. I searched and searched, like before, for the operation manual. I found it. I did not understand about the notches for short cases and long cases. I have been doing it all wrong since I got the press. I can adjust the powder measure for 9mm now. I hope the administrator deletes this thread. I'm embarrassed.

Anybody know where I can get a Hornady Quick Change Powder Dies for the generation 1 press.
