Default Dillon 650 Spent Primer Fix

Here's a link to some pics and descriptive information users of the Dillon 650 can use to easily fix the problem of spent primers under foot. I did NOT invent/devise this fix...I have read and seen information on several different reloading forums and offer my rendition of how best to fix the problem. It's cheap and easy.

Several of the folks on the Brian Enos Forum got this fix a going...I just tweaked it a bit and took time to get pics taken so others can see how to keep the primers off the floor.

Hope it helps.

By the way, any Dillon 650 owners who need to fix this problem....just reply here and in a week I'll draw a name and send the winner all the parts needed to fix the problem. I've got these parts all tweaked and ready to install...it will take you a few minutes to solve the problem.

Bob

Default Primers 650 spillage

Bob,
I was doing some loading on my 650 last night and cursing the spent primers spilling occasionally. I remeber reading a similar mod some time ago, but its probably been about 9mths since I last reloaded.

Thanks for the piccies.

Cheers,

Aussie D

Great pics and explanation. I bet that whole system could also be modified to fit a few other presses as well..............

Also try putting electrical tape or duck tape around the top of the primer catch cup, get the tape and just build appox. 1/4 inch around the top edge, just enough so you can slide it back in with out distorting it.

This will work also, and done in 3 minutes, I replace the piece of tape once a year, just because over time the dust from the primers and such, and removing sometimes loosens the bond.

I used this for 3 years now and no mods to the press, and most importantly NO Primers on the Floor.

p.s. it works for my SD also

Joe

Thumbs up

Say it isn't so?? A Dillion needs modification? Looks like the Lee system.

Nice pictorial, very well done.

Bob:
Thanks for the excellent report.

I'm building mine as illustrated. I'd gladly buy the 'spent primer cup bracket' rather than cut my original up, if one were available (*kaff*kaff*).....

I managed to cobble a spent acp casing into the configuration in the photo.

List an address and amount & I'll immediately put a check/MO in the mail for the bracket.

OCD1,
Oh yes...there is no perfect press...this "fix" makes it easier to reload in your stocking feet!!!

m657,
I just took a hacksaw and cut my bracket. It was easy. It also made changing out the primer punch MUCH easier since the bracket (as it comes from Dillon) makes getting a wrench on the primer punch difficult at best.

There is a gent on Ebay that has a pre-made bracket. I might have bought one myself, 'cept I'd already cut mine and made the modification. After making the cut, and seeing how fast and easy it was...I'm glad I just cut mine.

If you look at the pic with the "spent primer cup bracket"....

Note the length(s) on each side of the bracket (see the red marks) ....this gives some measurements AFTER I cut it to better fit. If you take yours off and hold it the same way, you can then mark the distances and make the same cut. It's really pretty easy....it took all of a couple minutes, then a couple more to smooth the edge after cutting.

Bob

[sound of one-hand smacking self in forehead].....!!!

WOW, now THAT motivates me to get out the old hack saw....

Thanks again for your contributions to making my life more pleasant!!!!

What I'm planning to do is to buy a spare plate THEN do the cut....don't ask why this is important to me....

Not sure how I missed this thread when it was new! Gotta do better keeping up! Did this get into the "Tips and Tricks" thread? This needs to be put into the Notable Thread Index!

I made a modification to mine as well. I will have to get some pictures up of mine. Less fine tool work!

I took an industrial hose barb, like what they make air hoses up in a factory, 3/8"NPT to 3/8" ID tubing, drilled a hole in the cup and threaded it in. Once in, I took some silicone and made a "false bottom" that sloped on all sides to the barb, made it like a funnel. I think I will have to look into making a plate though. Like the one that they sell for $25!

Bob has a good fix. Thanks for sharing!

Nice job Bob, but it's actually easier than that. All you need is a 41mag or 44mag case, well two actually. Drill both primer holes out & get some 3/8"ID tubing. Put one case under the Dillon primer plate & the other in a hole in a small plastic water bottle. I use small hose clamps to secure them, but they really aren't needed. The tubing is a snug fit. Make the tubing long or short depending on your bench setup.

I wish I had this information 15 years ago. I have gotten used to walking on spent primers. Now When I do the fix I have to learn to walk all over again.

Thanks for the info and photos

Check the "Tips and Tricks" thread too, Beans. There are a few other suggestions as well!
