The economy must be getting better
Yesterday afternoon I went to the local State run outdoor range. Before I left I managed to pick up about a gallon of fresh pistol brass, including most of a box of 32 S&W. A couple years ago NOTHING was left on the ground.

Overall economy is still in the gutter, but your new Governor might be instilling some confidence at the local consumer level.
Oddly enough, I had a similar experience on Saturday. Not as much brass, but easier to pick-up.
A couple of young guys and gals were shooting paper plates at 25 yards with their newly acquired hi-capacity plastic guns.
The the plates weren't in much danger, but they kept the muzzles point downrange and seemed to be having a lot of fun seeing how fast they could miss.
As they packed up and started to leave after the ran out of ammo, I pointed out the sign that said to police up your brass and if you didn't want it, place it next to the back support posts for the roof.
After they left, I scooped up the piles of once fired brass into a couple large coffee cans.
I haven't sorted it yet, but judging by the empty boxes they put trash, there should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 .45acp and 300 9mm.
Since I was shooting rimfires, it was a profitable afternoon for me.

I must hang my head low as I admit this. There was a time when I had not a clue that the stuff was any good once it was fired. I thought people were just pack rats, or were super scrap metal collectors. I figured they were about like the people that will dig through trash for cans to recycle. Now I’m so bad I will dig through dumpsters for brass and empty boxes… I know, shame on me…

Yeah, I knew I'd hit the point I needed professional help when I found myself salvaging "good" ammo boxes from the range trash cans. At least when it comes to boxes, unlike brass picking, I only take boxes for calibers I reload.

Somebody on here said that he thought the economy was getting better because he saw a homeless man with a cell phone.

You've been over-pshrinked. The gentlemanly thing to do is supply boxes for the brass you don't reload to the person you sell/give it to.
Of course, my pshrink reloads calibers I don't, so he might be biased.

Guilty.
I've had people at the range asking if I sold the brass I was picking up for scrap.

I can always tell when our local Wal Mart has a good supply of ammo.
Lots of brass left lying at our outdoor range :-)
Mostly .40 S&W, .45 ACP and 9 mm

I have to tell on myself. I know how many rounds that I fired. Sometimes I am short 2 or 3 cases. I just can't find them. I usually pack up and go back to "look one more time". I usually find them but I do feel kind of cheap.
