Value of used brass, scrap?
Long story short a local guys has several hundred pounds of used brass. The origin is unknown perhaps range pick up. Its not sorted, not deprimed, just in buckets of who knows what. He wants to get rid of it so he says that the junk yard will pay $6.00 per pound. Now I dont know if he told the junkie it was spent bullet brass or just brass. I would not mind buying a few buckets but it seems way to expensive at $300 to $400 per pail. Its just priced out of my range at this price.
Asking around it seems that some junk yard wont take bullet brass, contaminated and primers may not be all brass.
I am I to cheap or is it overpriced?

I pick my own up at the range--it's free. Any that I don't want goes into the range barrel for their recycling fund.

Do you think it would be sitting around if he could get $300+/pal. B.S. Copper is at $4/lb. now. Cartridge brass is typically 70% copper. So the most valuable component is $4/lb new.

Make him an offer and see if he accepts it. If he doesn't, tell him to sell it for scrap.

2 weeks ago i took some scrap cases to the local recycler. I got $1.90 a lb. 6 bux? I don't think so. Copper is only trading @4.05 a lb. Brass is usually half of that. Make him an offer. Otherwise tell him to take it to your recycler and make his millions. He sounds like a sheeny.

I bought some a while back for $1.85 a lb. He was buying at $1.65 and selling for $1.85. Told me price went up and down with the price of scrap.

I agree with all of the above. It was about $2.25 a year or so back, but lately it's been under $2. Yes, clean copper usually brings close to double that of brass.

Our local recycler stopped buying ammo brass. I heard that a primed case went off in his shredder and now he's running a little scared.

Thanks Guys!!
At least I know I'm not crazy...well, ok, in this matter
I dont really follow scrap prices, for years I got $.01 per pound for iron. I scrapped a few tons a while back and got around $.07 so it was a big jump.
I know the yellow metals went up just not sure how much. I buy bronze for work and that has gone up A LOT in the last several years but not not six times. I was looking at lead a while back and thats gone up quite a bit also.
His price just struck me as extreme.
Thanks!

I was rather disappointed when the last 5 gal bucket of scrap brass I sold only netted me enough for a couple thousand new primers.
"$6"....don't think so.

Last time I went to the local junkyard all cartridge brass had to be kept separate from the other brass. When asked why?.The dealer said that it all had to be shredded made unusable prior to being shipped out of the country. (china?) Frank

Hey Classic 29, that's a pretty nasty name you're slinging there. Might cut it in Pine Knot, but not on public forums. Yikes.

Just sold about 220-250 pounds for scrap last week. Forgot the exact figure.
Current buy rate locally was $1.65/pound. Rate was consistant with several local scrap yards.
Scrapper insisted every piece of cartridge brass had to be personally inspected by their staff for live rounds. Took them about an hour to process my load with three guys working on it!

Sheeny=shyster around here. Someone who is unscrupulus.
Not like I'm cursing him. Old word, you hear things like that when your raised by Depression era Grandparents. Don't know of it's meaning in other parts of the country. Care to give me your definition of it?

Like I posted before, around here it means an unscrupulus person. Guess now I've got to Google it. Sorry for offending anyone.
ETA: Just Googled it--WOW, I didn't know it means that outside of here! Really sorry bout that.
