Default 200gr swc in 45 Colt Case Can Be Too Long

I have loaded 200gr swc's intended for the ACP in 45 Colt cases before. but not a lot. I started some today and noticed that if crimped in the grease groove, they are too long for some SAA cylinders. They fit fine in my 25-5, but are too long for my SAA clone.

Why do you want to crimp in the grease groove? Seat them just like in .45 ACP, bullet shoulder flush or slightly higher than the case mouth.

I use 200 grain SWC's in .45 Colt quite a bit. I just seat them so the shoulder of the bullet is about 1/16" below the case mouth and roll crimp over the shoulder of the bullet. I use light to medium target loads, usually with HP-38/W231 and get excellent results in a Ruger Blackhawk, S&W 625-11, and a Colt 1909 Army.

I do the same thing with the same powder in a Ruger NM Blackhawk and S&W 625-3.

The new AH has a reloading article about loading the bullets deep and crimping over the shoulder. I may have to try it. The author also said he got very good accuracy.

Howdy

You might want to try a bullet with a crimp groove (cannelure). I have noticed that many 45 semi-wad cutters do not have a crimp groove. These are primarily for crimping with a taper crimp for 45 ACP. I do have a box of 255 grain .452 semi-wad cutters with crimp grooves, but they are longer than a 200 grain bullet and there is space for a crimp groove.

Most Round Nosed and Round Nosed Flat Point bullets do have a crimp groove. They are primarily for crimping with a roll crimp for revolvers. You may want to try a 200 grain RNFP. They are readily available and you can use the same data that you would for a 200 grain SWC.
