Hey deer hunters what loads do you use in your .41s? I plan on taking a Model 57 8 3/8" to the woods next fall and would like to know what you use. Help me with bullits; cast/jacketed, powders and primers. Thanks loads.

A good 215 or 220 grain cast bullet with at least 17.0 grains of 2400 should do ok.

+1...exactly right, standard primer, good roll crimp. I like the hardcast bullets as they will penetrate better than jacketed bullets. The sharp edges cut tissue well.

Any cast bullet at 1000fps should go clear through just about any deer.

My deer load is Hornady 210 gr JHP over 22 grains of H110 lit off with a Remington 2 1/2 primer. Data taken from the Lyman Pistol manual. Listed at 1400 fps but I haven't run it over my chrono yet.

Two cautions:
1. it will make your ears ring for a while after you shoot
2. don't rest a revolver against the side of a tree

This is a near max load so approach with caution in your revolver. Mine were fired from a Model 57 also.

A 210gr Hornady XTP on top of 17.5grs of 2400 chrono'd at 1,413 fps from my 6" S&W. Typically you can add a 100 fps+ for the extra barrel length of an 8 3/8".

9.5grs of Unique pushes a 215gr LSWC out the barrel of my 4" Mountain Pistol at 1,157 fps. Should be north of 1,300 fps from your 4" longer barrel.

Either one should kill dear with monotonous regularity when the shots hit in the right place.

I am rather found of slightly heavier bullets in my 41 hunting loads. The Lee ( I cast my own) 240 grain SWC mold is the easiest to encounter. I have never had one not to complete penetrate. I also am careful not to be shooting through any shoulders. Cast from 50-50 WW- pure they expand out to .60+ and leave a large exit hole. 17 -18 grains of 2400 will do all you need and shoots nicely out of my M57 6". I hunt river bottoms and woods in East Central ILL. so have never had to shoot farther than 36 yards. I get sighted in for 50 yards and am confident of good hits out to 70 yards.
