Default S&W500 & 460 : Medium Powder Powder Selection

Hello All,

I have found and using very good HOT H110 loads (2200 to 2600 ft-lbs) & WEAK Trailboss loads (600 to 700 ft-lbs) for both the 500S&W and 460S&W that I enjoy immensely.

However I am looking for some MEDIUM power loads (1500-1600 ft-lbs). Will be using LEAD BULLETS exclusively. (325gn / 440gns in 500 S&W and 255gn / 340gns for the 460SS&W). I am looking for a single powder that can manage those 4 loads if possible. Any ideas? I dont want to deal with super low charge weight powders due to risk of Ka-Booms due to large airspace. Something w/ charges in the range of 20-40 gns.

I would consider 2400 or even power pistol. Alliant's webpage gives loads for both of these powders, but if you want to download it, I would email their tech support guy (Ben?). He's been very helpful in my past experiences with questions about powder uses.

I've used titegroup to good effect at or near their starting loads listed on hodgdons webpage, and these may be a consideration, but they do up the pucker factor by such small amounts per case. For sure, I wouldn't use titegroup anywhere near it's listed maximums, especially with lead.

Good Luck and let us know what you end up with. It seems there is very little low to mid-range 500 data out there.

IMO Longshot will make a middle load powder. Longshot is a really good powder that's usually overlooked by most reloaders. Also, Hodgdon has Longshot load data for the 460 & 500 Magnum on their Load Data Site.

A lot of manuals and websites concencrate on copper plated bullets....

The John ross page has the following statement on the 500 S&W "For medium power loads try 4895, H335, BLC-2, H322, 4759, or 4198 powders. Put in as much as will fit and you'll have a uniform, mid-power load with any lead or jacketed bullet. With 100%+ loading density, velocity will be slowest with 4895 and H335, and fastest with 4759 and 4198. No 100% density load with any of these six powders fired in the S&W revolver will be near maximum allowable chamber pressure with any bullet unless the bullet is constructed of a material more dense than lead.". He's the guy who has his own custom 5" 500S&W so he probably knows his stuff.

All of them are RIFLE powders and all would be 100% loads, not much to go wrong there.
