Default Vihta Vuori 3N37 vs. Alliant Power Pistol

A local dealer brought some stuff to a match the other day. One of the things he was selling was Vihta Vuori 3N37 for $28.99 a pound. Vihta Vuori powders have always been obscenely expensive, but they are very clean burning and produce very minimal flash. Has anybody ever compared 3N37 to Power Pistol over the chrono? Power Pistol has always been the most outstanding performer for me in the 9mm and .45 ACP revolvers with heavy loads, but with a lot of flash. Does anybody have any velocity figures to share with .45 ACP and 230 to 255 gr. bullets?

David, I wish I could help with comparative figures, but I can't. I've loaded lots of 3N37 in 9x19, though, and a little in .40 S&W and .38 Super. It is very clean and pretty flash-free, and outrageous velocities can be attained with it in 9x19. It was one of the original powders used to make "9 Major" in IPSC, back when Major PF was 175 and before 9 Major was banned for awhile. You are correct that the price is too high, but it is good stuff.

OK, how about .40 S&W? Is it possible to improve upon the velocity of factory loaded 180 gr. jacketed bullets? This would be in a stock Glock 35.

Interesting. I use Power Pistol in 38 spl and the flash from it can be pretty substantial. One range asked me to not use the PP loads on their steel target because they were "too hot". The PP loads chrono about the same as the Speer Cleanfire which bothered no one so I figured it was the extra flash made then look hotter. If I can find a local dealer I'll buy a pound of the 3N37 to try it out.
