Default LP Will Not Fit In A SP Pocket

Boring afternoon so I decide to load some 45acp. I run into a problem when the primer will not seat. Turns out I have 2 Federal cases with SP pockets. I must have picked them up at the range last time. Two out of 150 isn't bad, but they should be painted bright red or something.

You got that right, PITA. I don't pick up any brass but my own. Still got 50 SP primered brass. In the recycle bin.

I just throw 'em in a separate bucket and then when I have my Dillon set up to load small primer stuff, run them through then.

I'm seeing a lot more 45 Auto brass around my parts with the small primers. All the Federal stuff sold at Wal-Mart, a bunch of Federal Match ammo that the local dealer has had a special on, and Blazer Brass, again, that the local dealer had pallets of and ran a special on.

Shoots just fine with a small primer. Just annoying when you find it mixed in with your LPP stuff, especially when running a progressive.

If you're just now finding some of the Small Pistol primed brass, you're lucky, as it's been around for several years now. Get used to .45 acp brass with small pistol primers, as it's going to become more common. Most of the current Non-Toxic ammunition in this caliber is being loaded with Small Pistol primers, as well as all Blazer Brass and some Federal.

There has never been a need for a Large Pistol primer in the relatively small volume of the .45 acp case, and small powder charges, but "we've always done it that way", so it remained.

A lot of bullseye shooters are finding they get better accuracy with the Small Pistol primed brass, too.

Hope this helps.

Fred

Agreed, PITA. My last IDPA match I picked up brass, had to sort it, which is generally not needed. Nothing screws up you 650 like SP brass in a LP priming system.

I was just doing some 45 acp loading and found 2 (I believe) Blazer brass with sp primers. Luckily I caught them during inspection after going through the tumbler. I know these were range pickups. During IDPA matches, we usually can't tell whose brass is who's...so we all kinda share in that respect.

Well now I have to go break out those good sized bags of SP .45 I've been saving to try 'em out.

Awhile back some writer said pretty much the same thing. He got a ton of 'em at a comp. Said he tried 'em & they worked great.

All reports I've seen say that pressures/loads are pretty much unaffected.

....gonna have to figure out some easy way to make separation of the two BEFORE going thru station 2 of the 650!!!

The SP 45 brass has been so rare in my area, until just lately, that you never ran into it in the 'range brass' bags.
