Default Powder and Primer Sources ?

I've always bought my reloading components from folks such as Midway, Graf, and Powder Valley. IMHO quality products, competitive pricing and great service. As a matter of full disclosure, I have absolutely no financial or other interest in any of these companies.. just a satisfied customer.

With all the websites and my normal interest in saving money where possible, could any of you suggest other reliable sources of powder and primers ? I realize a low-ball internet price with no stock on hand or anticipated is not at all helpful.

Appreciate your input and again, this is an honest request for
assistance in saving money while reloading.

Also, are there any good sources of "surplus powder" suitable for 38 sp, 45 ACP, and .223 ?

Thanks,

Southampton

I get mine from Cabelas. Fortunate enough to have one about 45 minutes away. I can't afford to buy enough in bulk to save the Hazmat fee. So I just pick up the 1lb containers as I need them, generally wait until they have a promotion or have enough Cabelas points to pick up all my reloading supplies.

Google "Powder Valley"

EDIT: Wow, I guess I skimmed that too fast...

This is another one I have used in the past:

Fin, Feather and Fur Outfitters in Ashland, Ohio. Best brick and mortar store ever! You're looking at 4 rows of bullets, 4 rows of powder, 1 row of primers and the second photo shows the fifty or so types/calibers of bullets sold in bulk along with corresponding cases.

Midway IMO is off my list for primers and powder because they drop ship and charge you 2X hazmat fees when you buy both. Powder Valley is probably the best online store to buy both. I'm 71 miles from Cabela's so when I need a pound of this or that I make a day of it and then the wife and I go out to dinner on the way back.

I've got a Graf's and a Cabela's about 30 minutes from me (St Louis MO), but Graf's gets all my business. They'll order kegs for me if I ask, and I've been going there for 30 years or so, bought a bunch of guns there too. It's nice dealing with the same people year after year.

I refuse to pay Hazmat fees, period. If I lived two hours from the shop I'd just buy in bulk more than I already do.

One thing I really dislike about Cabela's is the fact they still charge hazmat to ship "site-to-store".

Fin, fur and feather is a cool place to visit! Too far to drive and get stuff but, it is a cool place to go if you are in the area!

I use Widener's. I don't buy powder over the net but I do primers. Widener's has the best prices on Wolf, most of the time and Powder Valley comes in a close second. I have also bought primers from Graf's and sons but that was a pick-up order. Our kids go to college in SW Missouri and I called and ordered some and had the wifey stop and pick them up.

She wasn't too happy as that added 2 more hours to a trip that is already 10 hours! She got over it though! haha

I've been using Mid South for about 15 yrs and Natchez for about 10 yrs. However, for powder and primers, I've found it's cheaper to buy them locally because of the hazmat fees, unless you can go in with a couple of your buddies and split the hazmat fee. Some of these places have a flat $25 hazmat fee per order, regardless of how much (lbs) you order.

+10 on The Fin. I'm going to Mansfield Sunday for my Moms birthday party and plan on swinging by The Fin on the way home. A couple weeks ago I won a $25 Fin Feather & Fur gift card in a drawing and I'm sure I'll I'll find something interesting to spend it on.

For .223, try WC844 powder available from Pat's Reloading or Jeff Bartlett. I think Jeff also has new Unique for $60 per 6 pounds.

If you haven't tried it, WC844 is surplus government powder which is bulk powder, not cannister grade, so you will need to work up a load in your rifle, not depend on a chart. I've used it for years and it's excellent powder at a fantastic price. BTW it used to run about $45 per jug instead of the current $85.
