Unhappy Why do I reload? I think I am gonna quit!

I just spent a boat load of money on a order of primers and powder. For What? So I can reload all these different calibers to punch holes in paper?? Let alone projectiles.

With all the money I spent, I could have bought a lifetime supply of 22lr. Never have to load anything, no worries about picking up brass, cleaning it etc, etc. I can still punch holes, just smaller.

Less cleaning, no changing dies, adjusting powder measures, inspecting brass.

The thrill is fading if not gone. It's so hot and humid I don't even want to drive all the way to the range. I'm in a slump. Maybe reverse cabin fever.

Maybe I'll just get a X Box or Wii and hunt and fish on my couch.

What is it all about? The Hokey Pokey??

Well, some guys like shooting 22lr, some like shooting something else. I am firmly in the something else catagory. Besides, I can reload 45acp for the cost of good 22lr by casting my own bullets. Free lead & 3.5c/rd for powder & primers has me shooting 45acp for $3.50/100???? Yeah, that is why I reload.

First of all this is why you should always have loaded ammo on hand. For the times when you cant make your own.

Second, 22's are no fun to me. I got rid of 2 22 pistols and just kept my 10/22 rifle. I never shoot it.

Third, if you need match grade rifle ammo you will be happy you can reload.

Forth, One day you might only be able to reload to make ammo. Everyone forgets the health care bill is not into affect yet. When these jerkoffs relise they cant afford that with everything else ,taxes will go up. They blast gun and ammo taxes.

Fifth,This goes with number four. People are not panic buying right now. You should be stocking up on reloading stuff, parts and fully loaded ammo right now.

Lastly if you dont want to reload any more put all the stuff on EE and people will buy it/including me.

Think go and hard before you bail out on reloading. Baltimore wants a dollar a round tax. So if that goes through your 22 ammo would be more expensive then a box of 45 acp.

1 brick in Baltimores world is 500 bucks plus that actual brick.

1 box of 45 acp is 50 bucks plus cost of a regular box.

Think twice.

Fredj338 that is real good for 45 acp. I dont have the set up to cast my own. I bought a ton of 200 gr LSWC from a local guy. I am doing 100 45 acp for 10-12 bucks.

I am going to stock up on more lead very soon. Inflation is comming and it is comming in hard. I am buying extra canned foods every week I can. Powder/primers/ lead/brass. You get the idea.

Gold and Silver is telling the world **** is on its way. Everyone better listen

Well, everybody gets into a rut now and then. Maybe a new kind of competition? Volunteer to be a match director ( now that will keep you busy)? Travel to matches out of town? Compete at a high level match you can't possibly win, but get to be up close and personal with the greats? Take a dream fishing trip?

One thing for sure, if you give up and plant your rear on the couch, you are going to die young, and not enjoy your remaining days either.

Keith's Reloading Rules

Rule #1 - Reloading is a Winter Sport
Rule #2 - Plan ahead as to what you need and how much
Rule #3 - Develop and load and stick with it
Rule #4 - If you have a REAL need for large quantities of different pistol ammo, buy extra presses and set them up for particular loads.
Rule #5 - Stop loading when it's no longer fun. You can always do more later.

I usually shoot at least once a week, I havent gone since early July. Why:

Its to hot
To much traffic
Other plans, parties, etc
Rain
etc etc etc

I want to go, almost went today for some rifle shooting. Checked the radar, heavy storm clouds coming. Sure enough the storm they said was coming a 6pm was here at noon...

So I smoked some pork chops and chicken instead...

Oh well, its almost fall.

And 22's can be fun for shooting tin cans, but at paper, its soooooo boring to me

In the same spirit of Rule 3, I could have said this better but why try! I'll just agree with what fred said and call it quits.

p.s. I haven't cast since early summer either. I need to to get more of the newer bullets wrung out before fall/winter hunting season starts.

Hot and humid is a part of life in Florida. When I was in Miami for 3 weeks this year, the locals thought it was a bit hot @ 100*F and 100% humidity BUT they laughed at me because I thought it was unbearable. They just went about their normal business, hot or not.

When do you get climatized to your local? You been there long enough to get that way, bud! Get over it or move! hahaha

You guys are just yanking my chain, right? You are just depressed and venting off some steam. You are seeing the price tag on everything, not just reloading, going up and had a reality check. Just hold on for the roller coaster.

My deal departed Aunt Gladys had a saying....used on the kids when we were in a quandary about something:

"Make it easy on your self."

Maybe you should just lay it aside for awhile.

Having just spent about $140.00 for 200 rounds of match grade 38 special wadcutters, I need no more reason to reload than to keep the cost of shooting low enough to enjoy!

Don't do it on hot humid days, it just plain sucks to do anything on a hot humid day except for floating around in the pool.

You hit the nail. As I mentioned reverse cabin fever. Every day it's raining, hot and humid. Mowed the lawn today, thought I was gonna die. I normally edge and weed whack, Forget it!.

I have been loading a lot, just don't want to go out and shoot.

I even have a deep cycle boat battery, inverter and big box fan. helps a little to blow the hot air around.

Being a fellow Fl resident I can relate to the summer weather here. As a matter of fact, during summer we see a very marked reduction in the number of shooters. Our range has box fans behind every shooting position but, even with that, it is very hot!

Oh...by the way, have we forgotten to mention the swarms of mosquitoes??? Our range has a club house with A/C....we spend a lot more time in it drinking beer than shooting!

Cheer up.....October will be here soon! It will be a lot nicer then.

Why cook when you can dine out? Because you can make it your way and have the satisfaction of doing so, and seeing the result. I probably wouldn't shoot at all if I couldn't reload. I have a lot of $ sunk into this hobby and I enjoy it! When I get in a funk I usually find another caliber to take on. Sometimes I need to buy a gun to get that caliber. jk

Well now I have taken on reloading 5.7x28 which is my 13th pistol caliber. I find the process fascinating, relaxing, and it gets my mind off other issues.

They say life goes in a full circle; most of us began with pellet/BB guns & then stepped up to 22’s.

You should actually give 22’s a try, their extremely accurate, just as well made as their center fire counterparts if not better & will be challenging to shoot especially at distances due to the wind drift. As you explore the wonderful world of rim fires you’ll find that 1 ammo won’t work for all your different rim fires. So you’ll start buying different brands/types of 22 ammo to feed the different rifles & pistols.

Then of course the next step is to start investing in pellet guns & a pellet trap. Highly accurate match grade pellets are cheap & you can shoot them in the comfort of your own home/yard/garage/basement, ECT. Don’t laugh at the lowly pellet guns, you’ll find that they are better made than most rifles/pistols. They are extremely accurate & have sights/triggers to die for. The pellet guns are also harder to shoot accurately than their center fire/rim fire counterparts & will hone your marksmanship/shooting skills with them. The rifles are made to do headshots on flies & the pistols body shots at 10m. And of course you’ll invest in some pellets; here are some pellets that were cheap, $2.50 per 500 that will hold the x-ring with a 10m pistol.

Cleaned out the pellet trap.

Some world class Olympic play toys, the top pistol is a 10m pellet pistol, the middle pistol is a 25m issf/rapid fire 22lr pistol & the bottom pistol is a 50m 22lr free pistol.

But at the end of the day there’s always time for the center fires, a couple ACP’s for the 1911.

Default If you don't want you reloading gear I will give it a good home.

I don't shoot as much as I would like, only about 3-4000 rounds a year and half of that is .22lr from a bolt gun, the rest is .38/357 .45acp .30-06 and .45-70. Though I love the .22lr I don't think I could give up centerfire shooting.

99% of my shooting is target shooting, if I did not reload and cast my own bullets I could not afford to shoot but a few hundred rounds of centerfire a year. I still enjoy spending a quite evening crafting my rifle rounds one at a time with care and precision, but cranking out 1000 rounds of .38s and .45s is a mind numbingly tedious proposition From the days casting to the hours of trying to keep the press full of primers and powder as my arm tires from the repetitive pulling of the lever. But for $50 I can either shoot 100 rounds of factory ammo or 1000 rounds of home brew.

Being a rookie reloader, I have learned a wealth of information from guys like you and my other SW forum pals. As a new handgun owner and reloader something has sparked within. In addition to spending more time with my dad who is a reloader, I've also learned a little more about handgun shooting with my wife and two teenage daughters. I thank you and my fellow reloaders for sharing information on reloading in general that saves time and possibly lives. I've benefited greatly from this forum.

Hopefully this is just a slump your going through. I need guys like you!

Whatever you decide is your business, but I have a feeling this is a season your going through. I believe reloading is in your blood............. it has just gotten into mine.

Thank you, Richard

A few years back I went through a phase where I was shooting a lot of .22's. I began to question the need for the larger calibers since I was just shooting paper. But then the phase ended and I'm back to shooting centerfires. There's just something missing with the rimfire.

Mr. Forester Sir... Someone is showing off, no?? LOL

I was out Tuesday to do some handgun shooting with my oldest son.
I didn't realize how much I shot until I got home and put the spent brass away.

I fired:
200 rounds .38 Special
80 rounds .357 Magnum
50 rounds .32 Auto
100 rounds .45 Auto
150 rounds .22LR
I would call that a very good day at the range!!
Without reloading most of that wouldn't be possible but for the .22 ammo.

Wednesday was a rifle day at the range...

I shot back to back IDPA weekends here, both days it was right @ the 100deg mark. Hydrate, wear a hat & some sunscreen & go shoot. Beats doing the lawn.

Damn, although there's not too many things that make me want to sit out a shooting day very hot weather like that comes close. You're right, hydration and cover are very important. Heat like that can make you sick, well, at least at my age it can...

No ArchAngelCD, I’m not showing off (too much)LOL. Living in NE Ohio put me in opposite yet similar circumstances as Rule3. I get to feel the same way in winter, January to March is just killer.

I would to go to a club that has a small shack behind the shooting line on the rifle range and bring a heater. Shooting in 20* weather with 5-15mph winds & 12+” of snow just made for less than ideal conditions.
From there I joined an indoor range (50ft). It’s a bit of a drive to get there. They keep the range cool, 50* to save of heating expenses in the winter so I’d have to turn everything up & make a fire in the main rooms wood burner. It’d take a couple of hours for the range/main room to get up to temp. Shooting indoors the center fires had to be jacketed bullets, lead reloads smoked too much. So it was easier/cheaper to shoot 22’s. One of the main problems with 22’s are that they are temperature sensitive, match grade ammo will shoot to a different poa at 50* than it will at 70*.

So I started looking into pellet guns, at that point in my life they were nothing more than kid’s toys to me. The more I learned the more respect I acquired for them. Now I own 3 of them, the 10m pistol, a 10m 4p rifle and a sporter. The rifles use the same front sight inserts and I’ll put the different inserts in to mimic the sight picture of the various rifles that I shoot. It’s so convenient to just walk in the next room & shoot for awhile rather than loading everything up, bundling up and going to the range.

When it’s 20* out & snowing and blowing, I’ll reload a little, pick up a pellet gun shoot a little then do something else for awhile then start all over again. When it hits the 90’s* around here I say uncle & get in the AC and play around reloading, shoot some pellet guns & try to stay cool.
My last acquisition was a compact scope for the sporter pellet rifle. It’s a mildot scope called a bug buster for a reason. Just something to think about, world class guns/triggers/accuracy, cheap ammo and can be used any time you wish in minutes in the comfort of your own home.

I feel your pain about "Is it all worth it?" Loaded 3,500 45 ACP, 500 44 mag, and almost done with 2,500 357 mag.

Yup it is worth it! I'm down to my last brick of George Bush small pistol primers, and just started on my first case of Ojama large pistol primers. I think I'll get by till 2012.

The problem is you're "reloading" and not "handloading". Crafting good handloaded ammunition can be more fun than shooting, but not if you look at it as a chore to just crank out paper punchers.

I can tell you that as much as I love shooting .22, I really love shooting my .38's and .357's. I don't know about you, but having seen the cost of ammo in the last year I can still save more by reloading. One of the problems I see when guys first start reloading (not saying this is you but have seen it from others) is that they go out and buy the top of the line everything to reload, and then wonder why they are broke. I say try the less expensive stuff first and see what you need later. When I reload, I only do 50 rounds at a time, it doesn't take a long time and it isn't tedious. I can get a couple of hundred rounds through in a week. Believe me, wait until next year when the new election comes around and then the whole Mayan "I got bored and stopped writing" end of the world calender just like the Y2K thing I can almost guarantee ammo prices shooting upward. Reloading supplies will be right there in the price hike as well. This is why I also took up bullet casting as well, to help cut down the costs and to make sure that I don't have to worry about having what I want in stock. My ammo is always in stock.

Take a true Sabbatical. Set yourself a timeframe ( 6 months? A year?) put your gear away and make a note on your calendar.

If you're still feeling the same way at that time, perhaps this pursuit has run it's course.

It is not a good thing or a bad thing, it's just a "thing". Relax, it's all good.

I'm going to the range today with nothing but MAGNUMS!

At least I will not have to search in the weeds for my brass.

Full house 44 MAGS!

Too much emphasis on the cost. Yes, you save money, but it is more than that. I like a manual shift car too, because I feel like I can get better performance than the guy next to me who just stomps on the gas pedal. Something about man-machine interface makes me want to do it better. That's why we targetshoot, right? When my shooting buddies want to trade their factory ammo for my reloads, because they believe mine deliver better accuracy, it just makes me feel good.

Yeah, it is hot and humid down here in Florida. On those days, I sit in the backyard and shoot my air-rifles.. great fun. Now, when the wife wants to watch American Idol or The Bachelorette, I thank God I can go into the garage and make my own music with my Dillon 550. You do too, you just forgot.

Good advice. Remember the old saying: "A change is as good as a rest!" (And vice-sersa! )

Reloading isn't quite as economical as it used to be - that's for sure. Jacketed bullets can be outrageous, and even the things we can't make, like primers and powder, have gone up enough that it has affected the economics of handloading. And factory ammunition is much better now than it used to be, if my experience is any guide. Thanks to the internet and inexpensive freight, I believe it can be purchased comparatively cheaper than it once could. So there are some considerations out there that haven't always been. Like many older handloaders, I can remember when I had myself convinced I could shoot 38 wadcutters for the same money as .22s, or less. I don't feel that way any more.

But the weather is a separate thing. It doesn't get Florida-hot here in Indiana, but I don't enjoy shooting in the summer and do less of it that I used to. But I have found that by easing off in the summer, by mid-October, I am thinking of it again and am ready to go! Handloading takes another month or so. Usually by the time the white stuff flies, handloading is no struggle for me.

I don't get to shoot nearly as much as I would like, especially living in Maine, and no place to go in winter's. So reloading gives me another hobby for winter, and I can reload on for the coming summer--no pressures about getting to it. Hence why I reload on a single-stage, and not a progressive.

Sounds like boredom has set in.
Put the cover on your reloading press, put your stuff away, and spend time with your other hobbies.
I cycle through my hobbies. When I get bored with one, I shift my energies onto one of the others. Works for me.
If you sell your reloading equipment you will probably end up posting one of those "wish I hadn't sold" threads later on.

No. I am just sick of the heat and humidity.

I went to the range today, I must not be the only one in a slump as none was there.Which is fine by me.

I shot full house 357 mags and 44 mags until my hand hurt, still does.

Depending on what this storm/ Hurricane does, probably will not be shooting at the end of the week.

Filled up the gas cans for the generator just in case.

Hey! I went to the range today too! Full house 44mag as well! Only difference is that there wasn't a cloud in the sky, humidity is minimal, and a nice 77*F!

1400fps from my M629 Classic with 5" barrel! WhoooHoooo! They really thumped!

Someone left a softball there. Nothing left of it now! You should have seen what I did to a water jug with those babies!

Big boom, much smashum!

Snap out of it bro., before you drag someone else into the mullygrubs!

Need some boolits to try?

I forgot what 44Mag firearms you have. Send me a PM and put your address in it. I'll send a few to ya!

Have you ever loaded a 200gr RNFP? What about an Elmer Keith 250gr H&G #503? I have that humongous 240gr HP that I have a few of too. In fact, cast and sized some today! Got a whole bin full of them!

What ever happened to the 45Colt thingy? Ever make some loads with the last boolits I sent you? Did I get a report?

I just think you need purpose in your life! haha

If your guns are autos, get a .22 conversion kit and relax untit this feeling passes. Revolvers then just pick a k-22 . The 22 will help get through what ever bad habits you have picked up.
Factory ammo is nice it gets pricey quick. I have gone so far as to get two Dillon 550s one for large primers at a few hundred rounds an hour they can realy make you lower the pain of factory. When I took some high dollar classes that used up to 1000 rounds each. Remember you can't replace the equiptment for what you can get from the sales.

Got it!

What you need to do is get rid of that red equipment and move on up to the BLUE ONE!

I just got an RL450 from an ebay auction. Let me tell you, I needed that like I need another hole in my head!

There isn't anything automatic about it! Powder drop is manual, primer feed is manual. You gotta really pay attention when you run this thing!

I got it for a good price and wanted to see what the rave about the RL550 is all about. I am glad I didn't pay the price for one of them new. I would have been disappointed. Give me a good Square Deal B or an XL650 any day!

Be on the lookout in the classifieds. This puppy may get resold! I will post pictures. Had to spend some time cleaning it up. It is so tight, it is like new. Lots of dust and dirt, some surface rust that the seller neglected to mention!

Gonna have to get a rhythm going and see what I can do with it. I can tell you this, the way this indexes it is NOT a progressive press, sorry!

Last edited by Skip Sackett; 08-23-2011 at 04:20 PM. Reason: p.s. The wife came down and looked and asked if it can be upgraded! haha :D I said: "Sure! I'll check into it!"

After this order of primers and powder bill comes in, I will not be buying anything for a looong time.!
SWMBO is gonna be really ticked off!!

I am OK with my Lee Turret. I load so many calibers it really is a snap to change over. I don't need a thousand rounds a week.
Going slow I can do 100 rounds/hr. 1 hr per day for 5 days=500 rds a week. Works for me.

On the XL650, 500 rounds of 45ACP, 1/2 hour! If I load for the same amount of time you do, I would have 5000 rounds for the same week. Since I don't shoot competition anymore, that is almost a years worth in 5 hours! I would never get tired of reloading at that rate!

GO BLUE! (Just kidding around trying to lighten your sour mood! )

I have a firing range in my backyard. Have not shot much this summer-been too hot. Going to make up for lost time. Been reloading for over 20 years. Love it. Mowing takes 1 day a week as my yard is 6 acres. When I get tired of shooting I go and play with my 1970 Chevelle(383 and 4 sp). When I get tired of that I clean my 100 Case collector knives. And when I get tired of that I do some more shooting and reloading. I am retired military. I used to live like no one else. And as Dave Ramsey would say now I am living like no one else. Oh yes-I have a wonderful wife that does not know how many guns I have. So in closing that guy who has somewhat lost interest in reloading will find it again before too long. All he needs is a little break. As an afterthought he might want to try getting someone who has not reloaded into the hobby. Things would probably look different then. JMHO Thanks for listening.

Is anybody reloading for the S&W 500? If so, how are you trimming the case length? Thanks.
