Default 45 Colt in Handi rifle

Just curious....I'd like to load Hornadys 200 gr ftx bullet in a 45 colt Handi rifle. I have extensive experience loading that bullet in 460 mag. It seems like pushing that bullet to 1500-1700 fps should be reasonable. That should make a good dear round out to 100 yards.

Any thoughts? On handloads, I found some 44 mag data with 200 gr jacketed slugs. That should be a starting place? I figure the larger colt case would give less pressure.

You can get data for them from Hornady's website. Exclusive to that bullet. If you load for a Handi, you are going to be better off from us lever gun guys because you can use a longer OAL. If you use the longer OAL and couple that with some of the "Thompson Only" loads, or Linebaugh's loads for the ol' Colt, you are going to have a humdinger of a 45Colt carbine on your hands!

If you go with an OAL that Hornady suggests, remember, they are living by the lever gun cycling length and you most likely will have to trim cases to get there.

Maybe not for the 200gr, for their 250gr, I know that you have to.

I have had my .45 Colt Handi up to 1450 fps with 270 gr bullets, but it isn't that easy to do. It also plays the dickens with the sights, either shooting too high or too low, but rarely where it's supposed to.

I've been using H4227, but I may try some Blue Dot at about 40% of its capacity.
