new alliant powder in .357
Allliant has a new powder out called 300 mp. They list a 158 grain bullet to a velocity of 1687 however the velocity is out of a 10 inch barrel. What does that correlate into a 6 inch revolver? How was the accuracy?

Good luck, I have heard form friends that you need to fill the case up (read lots of powder) to get results! It was a NO-Go in 10mm...

The slower the powder, the greater the velocity per inch. I have done some testing on my own.
Bullseye powder, when fired in a handgun will give you xxx fps, the same load in a carbine gives you an additional 17fps per inch of additional barrel. Using those same firearms but with a much slower powder and you can increase as much as 30fps per inch.
Another case in point is with the 44mag. I have a 5" M629 Classic. My load from that will give me right at 1400fps. The same load, fired from a Marlin 1894 with a 20" barrel will deliver nearly 1800fps. For those additional 15" of barrel, I get 400fps. 400/15=26.66fps/inch.
Hope this helps.
p.s. 300mp is a slower powder.

I've seen some results posted on another forum, the velocities were less than spectacular. This powder seems to be a wash for revolvers, but you might be able to do some goods things with it in a carbine.

That's why I want to try it out. I already get good results from 2400 behind a 158 gr XTP. If 300MP can give me a little more velocity or the same velocity with less pressure without messing up the accuracy, I won't complain.
I'm not due to order more powder for a while anyways.

I'm still waiting to hear if it gets a bad rap for flame cutting like how many say H110 eat top straps all the time. 2400 still keeps trooping along in sales and use and it sounds like it's really similar.

300MP is made by St. Marks. The same folks that make H110/W296 and a host of other spherical powders. According to the article in Handloader, it is slower than even Lil' Gun and all of the rest.
Just got the magazine in the mail today so, headed to the "reading room" now! See ya in about 20 or so......................I know, TMI!
