Default 170 Keith SWC

I want to load this bullet in 38 special cases and shoot them from a 686. I would like to shoot them approx. 900-1000fps. Does anyone have experience with situation that I can draw on for load info?

Lightbulb Lyman 358429....

5.0 Grains of Unique in a .38 Special case...
7.0 Grains of Unique in a .357 Magnum case...

Used these loads for years with very good results. Elmer Keith first posted these loads before WW2.

According to an old issue of Handloader 5.5 grains of Unique with that bullet in a .38 Special case gave a performance of 1,011 fps from a 6 1/2 barreled revolver.

Can't do any better than what Sebago Son gave you.

If you are going to shoot the 358429 in .357 Magnum you better get used to the idea of crimping over the front band, there isn't any choice for most revolvers.

What objection do you have to crimping over the front band? This is the way .38 and .32 wad-cutter bullets have been loaded ever since they were invented! If there were any problem with doing it this way this would have changed a long, long time ago!

I've been casting, and loading the #358429 in the .38 Spcl over UNIQUE since the early 1970's. Used to use 5.0 grains with old Unique, now I do 5.2 grains with the new, cleaner formulation.

If I'm wanting +P performance I bump it up to 5.5 grains.

Never used it in .357 mag cases though.

The only revolvers I'm aware of that need the 358429 crimped over the front band are the "short cylinder" recessed S&Ws, the Dan Wesson .357 and maybe some of the Colts. A non recessed cylinder doesn't need the shorter round and the bullet will work as designed in my M66.

Maybe I missed something when looking at the OAL, are you able to load in the crimp groove for a 686? [357 cases] My cylinder is not recessed. I do have an abundance of 38 special cases though and would like to use them. Thanks for your input!

When I was loading the #358429's for my Ruger, as long as I kept my cases to trim length I was able to load the bullet in the crimp groove. There should be no problem loading them in you 686 but double check anyway.

Add the Rossi 971 to Paul's list of short cylinder revolvers. The Keith SWC does just fine crimped in the groove (and thus OVER SAAMI spec length) in .357 cases in my Ruger Security Six and S&W 19-5 No go in the Ruger LCR and S&W M&P J frame.....but I really don't want to shoot that bullet in those guns with heavy loads anyway. and COULD crimp ove rthe front band if I wanted to.

Hmm, I had a Rossi 462, but never shot 358429s out of it, unless they were in .38 Special brass.

It was missing the yoke retaining plunger when I bought it, so I ordered one from Rossi. It was the wrong one, so I made one out of a piece of stainless oilfield down hole wire. The LOAD generated 900 + fps out of it, but I ended up selling it anyway.

OOPS, that was 5.5 gr of Unique at a little over 900 fps. The LOAD actually clocked close to 1100 fps.

I crimp mine in the crimp groove & shoot in my #65 S&W. I use 6 to 7gr. Unique. very accurate load. S&W # 27 & #28 have short cylinders. those & the S&W Heavy Duty (.38 special) were what Elmer Keith used to develope his .38 & .357 loads. as far as I know all K-frame & L- frame guns have longer cylinders. I use magnum cases when loading Keith bullets. that way I dont have residue buildup in the chambers from .38s.

If you are loading 357 cases, what is the OAL crimping in the groove?

You can use 6.8gr to 7.0gr of HS-6 to get the velocity you're looking for in a .38 Special case BUT, those loads are most probably in the +P pressure range. Considering you're shooting them in a .357 Magnum revolver that won't matter. I would start with a charge of 6.4gr which is a high standard pressure load and work up until you get to the velocity you're looking for. HS-6 is a great powder for lead bullets and usually produces very accurate ammo. (use a magnum primer)
