I'm curious I have always fired 240+ grainers in my 44s. Is there a jacketed 180 that will group as well???

Sierra 180....they have always shot more accurately for me in especially Ruger firearms than 240s.... 29-31 grain of H110 was the load. Absolutely devastating on deer.

180gr XTPs. Accuracy to 100+ yards with H110/W296 or 2400 is excellent.

the 180G XTP always went where I wanted it to, however it seemed a bit superficial to the target. the 200 grain XTP has proven itself to be a far more useful bullet

Twist rate will play a bigger part in accuracy than bullet weight.

If you have a fast twist, 1:20" or so, you may over spin them with the velocity that 29-31gr of H110/W296 gives you. Maybe not, maybe so.

In a Marlin 1894 in 44Mag, the 180gr XTP comes out of that tube around 2000fps +. That is almost too fast for the best performance on deer sized targets BUT it will take them down if placed properly to 125 yards or so.

That load will really tear up a groundhog! Shot one of them with that load once, WOWSERS!
My homecast 240gr RNFPHP, 434640, does a job on them too!

The Marlin 1894 has a twist rate of 1:38". A bit slow for the 180gr'ers. So, hope this helps.................

Must be due to the genetically altered corn those Groundhogs eat to have to shoot them with a 44 MAG!!

Well, when I did use those bullets for that function, I was poor as a church mouse and could only afford one rifle. It had to be something I shot already so, 44Mag was it. Then I had to craft loads so I didn't overdo some types of shooting!

To be honest, I just like bullets over .4" in diameter going real fast! Like the ones you have! Those puppies out of my Puma are a hoot! @ 100 yards, I can move a tennis ball around all day long! Seriously!

Wow may have to give em a try then.. Will be launching them out of a 6" 629-2.

Also like Sierra 180 gr JHP. Load is old and too spicy for these times, involving several boxcarsfull of 2400.

Big fan of 2400 ... My hot 45 colt loads using 250 gr xtp an 2400 shoot very well.

Does your gun have the Endurance package? 180 XTPs and H110/W296 will be flame cutting central for anything but the strongest revolvers. I had a project a while back called "Fastest Revolver in the World...for a 44 Mag" where I attempted to reach 2000 fps in my Redhawk. I got to about 1920fps using this bullet and +P charges of W296 before I gave up. Super accurate, 1470+ ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle, but I was lucky to still have eyebrows afterwards. Massive fireballs in broad daylight.

44 mag case, 180 grain xtp, fed 150 primer and 11.0 grains unique. 1250 fps from 4 incher, very accurate. Used to substitute rem 180 sjhp,s , when they were cheaper (they still may be in bulk from Midway).

These are milder purposeful loads for revolver, athough they get bout 1500 fps from 16 in rifle.

Have seen the 180 grain xtps get very good accuracy when loaded over max charges of H110 from rifle.

Gonna have to build some for my 629... Thinking 22 grs of 2400 an a 180 xtp..

The 180 grain Sierra JHC, Remington case, Winchester LP primer and 30.0 grains of H110 out of my 8 3/8" M629 w/ Leupold 2x scope would shoot 2 1/2" 50 meter groups all day long. The truth is that I likes the 210 grain JHC better but anyway. The 30.0 grain charge was max. in my gun so I would start about a grain or grain and a half lower. As usual, you need tight bullet pull plus a heavy crimp with H110/W296, not just one or the other.

Yep, you get big time muzzle flash also.

My 629s seem to like the sierra 180s, 28.2 gr of H110, Rem brass, w/ Win primer. Not the hottest load, but has worked well on deer w/ complete penetration. Hope to blip a doe or two shortly with this load and my new 629 PC.

May have to try Hornady's to see if they'll shoot. Sierras have been scarce lately. Lots of places backordered.

Sounds like I may need to give the h-110 a try.

I tried the 240, 200 and 180 bullets from several makers before I landed on the Sierra 210. WW296 and the 210 works really well in my guns, accurate and reasonably fast.

That's my goal , an accurate load first that is not pushing the limits of the 629.. And not pounding like the 240s.

I like the Sierra a lot and shot a few deer with it years ago, it did just as well as the 240 XTP. I also use the Remington 210 as it is dimensionally about the same as the Sierra 210. Sierra has loading data for their bullet in their manual.

I shot quite a few whitetails w/ the sierra 240. Forget the load, but the powder was Alkan 8 I believe. It wasn't a barn burner, but it was accurate out of my 8 3/8" M29. Complete passthrough every time. I wanted to try the 180s simply because they had less recoil and were easier to handle. From what I've seen, penetration is not an issue. Now sometime down the road, I may want to work up a load w/ a 200-210 gr bullet as a happy medium between 180-240. This should be sufficient for the game I'd most likely be encountering: whitetail and pigs.
