'New' Silvertips in .270
I recently acquired a box of Western .270, 130 grain Silvertips from the mid-40s to mid-50s in order to reload for my 1950 model Remington 721. I thought some of you might appreciate the care the factory put into stacking the projectiles into the box. It was sealed until today.

Cool. Amazing the thought that went into packaging bullets in that era.

The Silvertip of that era wasn't exactly a "premium" bullet, but it was certainly in the top of the line class.

Beginning in '59, and for many years, I used 150 grain SilverTips in my Model 88 (.308) for Antelope and Mule Deer. They always did a good job.
And, Yes, that packaging is definitely a sign of the Olden Days.

Were Silvertips ahead of the curve?
I am assuming they were aluminum and were supposed to mushroom rapidly.. Nosler Ballistic tips did not show up til the late '80's, so were the silvertips their precursors and how well did they work?

If I'm not mistaken, the Remington Bronze point would be more like the precursor to the ballistic tip. They just used bronze instead of plastic.
Nosler was in business in the late '40s, but I believe they were only making the partition type bullets then.
My dad used bronze point .30-06 back in the middle '50s and they seemed to have been effective on the deer he shot.

Awesome
Jack O'Conner is probably smiling down from heaven on that box of bullets. Load em up hot on 4831 and those will be some flat shooting, deer killing sons of guns.

beagleye:
They are getting parked on top of 58.6 grains of 4831.
I thought the care in packaging was amazing since everything I buy now (or for the past couple of decades) looks like it was just dumped into a box.

True that on the careful packing. I believe Jack O'Conner's recipe was 62 grains, that's hot!! Powders may have been a little different back in the day.

I always found the Silvertips to be overly explosive in higher velocity rifles. WHY I went to partitions back in the mid 1970's when I shot a .300 Win Mag. though the 300 gr .375" ST's work pretty well on elk/moose in the three seevn five H&H at 2300 fps.

drifting thread... but yeah
3100fps does blow most non-premium bullets to bits. Makes for a quick kill but wastes so much meat. I guess when O'Conner was praising 270 WCF at 3100fps most of his shots were long. Sounds fun.
